Anni snapped this photo before everyone arrived at the 2012 Crescenta Valley Empty Bowls. The next Crescenta Valley Empty Bowls takes place a month earlier than the first five events: instead of mid-November, the sixth annual fundraiser is set for the first Saturday of October. The folks of Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church, 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose, will host the community on October 5 from 4:30 to 8 p.m. With each $15 donation, you choose a handmade ceramic bowl lovingly created for this event, enjoy some delicious soup and, after it's washed, take the bowl home. All proceeds go to alleviate hunger through wonderful charities in Tujunga, Pasadena and Burma. Stay tuned to this thread for updates -- along with the Crescenta Valley Empty Bowls Facebook page: www.facebook.com/cvemptybowls?v=wall

Here's the latest from FaceBook Empty Bowls: Something new this year: We are aware that faithful supporters of years of Empty Bowls have cupboards that are so full of treasured acquisitions that they are wondering where this year's bowls will go. We have also learned that the Strength For the Journey Camp (for people with HIV and AIDS) where Pastor Steve is spiritual Director has a tradition of giving heartfelt, handmade gifts to the campers. Pastor Steve would like to collect 100 gently used Empty Bowls so that he could present each camper with one next summer. If you have some bowls to spare at home or if you would like to donate your new bowl this year, we will gratefully receive them at a special table on October 5. What a great way to spread the love that has gone into the making of the bowls and the whole event. See you on the 5th. Attachments:

If you click on the Crescenta Valley Empty Bowls Facebook page, you'll see updates on some of the local restaurants that are cooking soup for Saturday night's fundraiser above information about the charities that will benefit -- along with some great photos from last year. Empty Bowls is our favorite get together every autumn. I wish I didn't have to work this Saturday. Anni and I can't be there until around 7 p.m., so we won't get a full selection of bowls and we risk a couple of the more popular soups running out. We'll miss some speakers and a lot of live music. But based on past years, the last hour is more relaxed. We still hope that we'll see some old friends from the vigil and from the church -- and we look forward to making new friends, as always, at Crescenta Valley Empty Bowls.

Well...that was a totally wonderful time. Lots of hard work by so many folks. Working together IS bigger and better than the sum of us apart. We got there what I thought was going to be a little late (well before 7:00) and the place was still jumping. Plenty of delicious soup, great bowls to from which to chose. Nancy H. was there and at her charming best! I got to see a couple of old friends who want to join us next year for the 'Running of the Bowls. And they might join us for the Xmas Peace Parade. Jeanne, what an amazing vision you have shared with and included us all. Bravo!

We also donated eight mint condition bowls (from Empty Bowls past) to the: Strength for the Journey Summer Camps Sponsored by the California-Pacific Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, including the Crescenta Valley UMC. The bowls collected here will go to campers next summer. We have over 300 campers per year and each one will receive a hand crafted bowl to take home. For more information or to donate your gently used Empty Bowls please contact: Rev. Steve Poteete-Marshall at 818-249-6173 in the Crescenta United Methodist Church office.

Thanks for the link, anni.It was another good year for Empty Bowls. Thanks to peaceniks for your support. We have had hundreds of people reading our EB posts on Facebook. What do you all think about a Facebook page for MPV?
