This Tuesday, June 26, members of the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church and Montrose Peace Vigil will be wearing black to demonstrate for Torture Awareness Month, initiated by the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., on our usual corner of Ocean View Boulevard and Honolulu Avenue in Montrose, Calif. I hope that I -- and you! -- can be there too. Thanks for explaining Tuesday's observation of Torture Awareness Day, Brian. I have been downloading and printing statements from participants, victims, coroners, and witnesses. I'm picturing us quietly reading them and letting the facts speak for themselves. I'm getting them from NRCAT and Reckoning with Torture's websites if you would like to choose one for yourself. It might take some advance reading to read them with understanding. Roberta has some beautifully updated postcards requesting the removal of Judge Bybee from his position. Let me know if you have any questions. I hope to see lots of you there.

Here's more about the NRCAT Event on Tuesday from an email from Jeanne along with a link to the PDF she mentions: Wear black if you can. All I have in mind is to read, letting the facts speak for themselves. We can each say who we are, what our occupation is and why we feel moved to speak for torture victims. If we run out of material, we can go through it again. I doubt that any passers by will stay for the whole thing.
There's a press release template in the toolkit.www.nrcat.org/storage/nrcat/documents/vigil_toolkit_june2012.pdf

Our public reading of torture testimony wasn't easy. Roberta, anni, Paige and I read excerpts from victims, prosecutors and interpreters. It is really difficult to think about the sickness and brokenness that leads to such horror. I was encouraged by the story of the prosecutor who asked to be removed from a case of a 16 year old prisoner because there was no evidence against him. He volunteered to go back to Iraq or Afghanistan rather than continue with the ill founded trial. Thanks to Roberta for preparing post cards for us to send to House Judiciary Committee. Perhaps she has a few left to bring to the corner on Friday.

It wasn't easy material but neither was it too hard being there supporting each other. I think we reminded a slice of Montrose that torture is torture and yet our government claims the right to use it. Thanks for getting us out there, Jeanne.
I have lots more postcards to House Judiciary Ctte. to bring to the corner.

This is my seventh summer with the Montrose Peace Vigil, and I can tell you that the sun hits hard right after the solstice at Ocean View Boulevard and Honolulu Avenue. And Anni points out that last autumn's winds wiped out much of our three shade. The wide and popular middle patch of grass on the corner was virtually abandoned for the shadows of the northern spot. The sun really blasts the opposite corner -- the three counter protesters returned this week with hats and lawn chairs, but it was hard to see them behind their flag display. Street traffic was up this Friday and so was our turnout: - June 1 - 9
- June 8 - 8
- June 15 - 18
- June 22 - 8
- June 29 - 12
Average weekly attendance this month was 11, two more participants than June 2011. That compares well to 12 in May, 10 in April, 12 in March, 11 in February and 9 in January 2012. As posted on our flagpole, here are this week's Department of Defense announcements of military deaths: Attachments:
