In July, peak traffic was down to 70 guests online in the previous 24 hours (from a high of 84 in June). The lowest number of guests here on the Montrose Peace Vigil message board that I recorded all month was 33. Right now, the counter at the bottom of the homepage says 54. In August, the peak number of daily guests was even fewer, 64. The lowest guest count that I saw was 29. As I post this monthly report, the message board has been visited by 60 guests in the last 24 hours.

This month, the numbers weren't much different: a high of 66 and a low mark of 24 guests in the previous 24 hours, as recorded in the Forum Information & Statistics section on the homepage. Right now, it says 48. Logged in members of the Montrose Peace Vigil message board are counted separately.

My perennial question, excuse if you have answered before, are these actual human beings or other computers or ? Eight years of reading and tracking the IP addresses that visit the message board -- something only administrators can do -- tells me that the majority of guests are either bots from every search engine in the world, such as Google, or the adware that follows everybody around the web to perform tasks like posting customized ads on the sites they visit that reflect their perceived interests and geographic locations.
For previous Traffic Report threads, I used to run the IP addresses through a locator service, then one or two sites that list known spammers and other Internet misbehavers. After I sifted them out along with the bots, I always found plenty of probable human visitors of goodwill, many using local Internet service providers. For instance, I identified visits from both the Pentagon and Yoko Ono's Imagine Peace website.
Back then, I could get a list of all the guest IP addresses for every 24 hour period. Since the ProBoards software update in 2014, I can only see 15 minutes worth, so had to I give up on tracking the unfamiliar IP addresses -- it's just too much work to put together a good sample. I still glance at the current list, and I usually see the Googlebots with their prefixes of 66.249. online, gathering key words to post links on Google searches that lead humans here.

Thanks, Brian, your explanation is both clear and interesting .... again:) My perennial question, excuse if you have answered before, are these actual human beings or other computers or ? In September, the numbers weren't much different than August's: a high of 66 and a low mark of 24 guests in the previous 24 hours, as recorded in the Forum Information & Statistics section on the homepage. Right now, it says 48. Logged in members of the Montrose Peace Vigil message board are counted separately. Traffic was up in October -- the highest mark was 83 guest IP addresses in one day and the lowest was 35. Many of the new visitors came here to read posts about the 24-hour Eagle Rock vigil, the Empty Bowls fundraiser and the thread about the California ballot propositions, clicking on links from Facebook and personal e-mails. Thanks to everybody who shares links to this message board. As I post, the counter on the bottom of the homepage says 62 guests online in the past 24 hours.

In January, the range expanded -- from a high of 84 to a low of 23 guests in one 24-hour period. Presently, 30 unique nonmember IP addresses visited the Montrose Peace Vigil message board in the day that just passed. Traffic was down considerably this month: the highest number of accumulated guests was 58 and the lowest was 24. At this moment, the counter says that 36 guests stopped by in the past 24 hours. I know firsthand that as many local peaceniks read posts on the message board during February as in previous months -- maybe more than usual -- so I attribute the drop off to fewer bots visiting here.
