Greetings, Friends and Neighbors,
Our return to a documentary film this month is life affirming, if not a live performance. "Bidder 70" centers on an extraordinary, ingenious and effective act of civil disobedience. A charismatic college student Tim DeChristopher takes on the Bureau of Land Management and saves thousands of acres of gorgeous wilderness from harm. In doing so, he risks a jail sentence and inspires some positive youthful activism. In Tim's words:
"At this point of unimaginable threats on the horizon, this is what hope looks like. In these times of a morally bankrupt government that has sold out its principles, this is what patriotism looks like. With countless lives on the line, this is what love looks like, and it will only grow..."
Are you ready to be encouraged, to receive some hope, to hear a story about courage and integrity and emerging leadership? Please join us at CVUMC on Friday, May 29th. 2700 Montrose Avenue, Montrose. Doors will open at 7, film at 7:30. Lively discussion and refreshments afterwards. Come and meet your caring, thoughtful neighbors and lets see if we can soak up some of Tim DeChristopher's enthusiasm.
Peace, Jeanne Lavieri

Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh!
I've heard excerpts of this on KPFK. I don't know if this is addressed in the movie, but DeChristopher has also discussed his experiences serving time in jail. He said some of the security officers are scarier than fellow inmates. (Some were officers who served in Iraq with lingering unresolved issues, and being sadists in jails is their new milieu.)

The film focuses on pre prison events, Ross. He's going to be at this big environmental convention in June in Claremont along with Bill McKibbon, John Cobb, and many more. www.pandopopulus.com/conference/

The theatrical trailer for "Bidder 70," which came out in 2013.Tim DeChristopher was released from federal prison just before the documentary hit theaters. Anni and I remember him from his appearances on Rachel Maddow's show and elsewhere in 2009, after he initiated his courageous actions. Here's what Tim is doing now, as seen on the website he launched last month: www.timdechristopher.org/

Thank you for those suggestions, Sharon. We have someone who is training for civil disobedience to prevent Keystone coming to add to the discussion. Some local causes would be great. I admit that I am ignorant about what's going on around here. RAPP is meeting at my house tonight at 7:30. If you'd like to come and inform and help plan the best way to inform and involve filmgoers, please do.

Sounds like a perfect tie-in to the movie, bringing it down to the local level. Are you going to have a brief canned comment letter (to NPS?) ready for people to sign and send, or talking points they can adapt? People who aren't deeply involved as some of us are on some issues usually need some ready-made activism or at least a leg up :-) I will be happy to bring envelopes for addressing and stamps.

I'm doing a brief recap of the Rim of the Valley, 710 tunnel, Condor Peak Wilderness area, and High Speed Rail projects currently in various stages of planning and development including links to various websites with sample comments - not sure I'll have time to write up form letters. I'll have reference material and lots of food for thought and discussion.
