Flo, seated, celebrates her birthday at lunch with other Eagle Rock vigil stalwarts at Astro last January. The North East Los Angeles Radical Neighbors for Peace through Justice started protesting military action in Iraq four months before the U.S. invaded in March 2003. Fifteen years later, NELA Rad still occupies the southwest corner of Colorado and Eagle Rock Boulevards most Saturdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m. -- enjoying a steady stream of honking and waving people driving through the intersection and talking with some of the pedestrians passing under the shade of the big gas station sign -- while advertising all issues related to peace and justice. NELA Rad has a page on Facebook: www.facebook.com/NELA-Rad-234583950085085/

Last Saturday at about 3:15 I was passing by Eagle Rock on the 2, having slogged across town from the Theodore Payne Native Plant Tour homes on the Westside. Because I wanted it to be, I blanked out on their daylight savings time change and decided they would be there at 3:30, so I got off the freeway and hit Colorado and Eagle Rock Boulevard, bearing lemonade and peanuts from the CVS. The fact that neither Norm, Pearl nor Ross were there as they said they would be still didn’t alert me to my error. Maybe the treats reached you guys, I hope so!
This Saturday afternoon my Westside friends are coming over here so I won’t be down in Eagle Rock at all. Then off to Ohio and North Carolina and away from both vigils til May 11th, when I will pop in on the way to Glendale at the Dodgers vs. Reds night!

We were otherwise occupied last Saturday. Instead of our regular vigil we spent a GREAT time celebrating Flo's 95th birthday at the Audubon Center at Debs Park. What a grand party. What a fine group of beautiful activists. Brian printed out this thread. I printed pictures on photo paper of our lunch with Flo (also from this page). We all (Eagle Rock Vigil) contributed to Flo's favorite charity (in her name).

The core ER people vigiled after the party, and I even lasted for most of the time! Nice pictures. We were otherwise occupied last Saturday. I just got word that Flo passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday night. She had been in hospice care for two weeks. I can post more details as I learn them.

Oh precious Flo. What a sweet light we're missing, now.

I remember Flo helping out with Population Connection activities in various Pasadena parks at least 12 years ago - maybe longer. What a loss to the community. Her passing reminds me of Dick Seeley who passed away a few years ago. What a privilege to have known these beautiful people.

Here's a shot of the Eagle Rock gang at last Saturday's (09-29-18) vigil.

A vigil in May 2014 by NELA Rad -- North East Los Angeles Radical Neighbors for Peace through Justice. Three of the people in that photo started protesting U.S. military action in Iraq four months before we invaded in March 2003 on a street corner in Eagle Rock, California. This November marks their 16th anniversary. Last year, Oss Rae gave his reflections on the first 15 years for the Los Angeles Indymedia website: la.indymedia.org/news/2017/11/296057.phpNow that Daylight Saving Time is gone, the Eagle Rock vigil is scheduled an hour earlier at the intersection of Colorado and Eagle Rock Boulevards -- Saturdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. -- until the clocks change again next March. May the sun always shine on NELA Rad.
