The Topanga Peace Alliance 167th Consecutive First Friday Film Night
"The Mental Health Crisis"
A special program of short videos and presentations Friday, March 1st, at
the Topanga Library
Snack Pot Luck at 7:15, Movie 7:30
For March the Topanga Peace Alliance presents "The Mental Health Crisis" a
special evening of short videos, presentations, and discussion focusing the
lack of public services for mental challenges, the criminalization of people
with mental health issues, and some hopeful signs that this may be changing.
The films and presentations will provide a background of how public
supported mental health services were discontinued in the 1970s and the
challenges that this created. We will show how some communities are now
recognizing that people with mental health issues do not belong in prisons
and are moving the funding from law enforcement to public health services.
The evening will include short videos from the series "This is Crazy:
Criminalizing Mental Health" by Brave New Films and speakers with firsthand
experience regarding the lack of public and affordable private support for
the mentally challenged and what we can do to change the current situation.
Before the film, we will have announcements regarding upcoming events and
actions for peace and social justice.
