I'm re-posting Jeanne's letter to remind myself (and others, I hope) that this is happening this coming Friday...
We are finishing up this year’s Gather, Inspire, Act film series with a major boost of inspiration that should get you through the summer until we resume in September.
Climate change can be an overwhelming topic. Those who believe what scientists are saying about the environmental crisis can be overwhelmed by its implications or frustrated by debates with deniers. Peter Kalmus, a climate scientist at JPL, has found a way to be effective, bypassing debates and keeping hope alive. He has cut his family’s fossil fuel use to 1/10 of the average American. “Being The Change: A New Kind Of Climate Documentary” tells the story of how he accomplished that reduction in consumption and how fulfilling the change has been for him and his family. His example is both inspiring and attainable for us.
We continue to gather to watch films because we believe that we encourage each other to contribute to a better world. This film promises to inspire us with many possible actions that we will be able to take. The first one is for you to get yourself to: Crescenta Valley UMC on Friday, May 10 to learn more. The church is at 2700 Montrose Avenue, Montrose We will meet downstairs in Fellowship Hall at 7 and the film will begin at 7:30. Refreshments will be served and we hope you’ll stay for a discussion after the film. Peace, Jeanne It is indeed happening and we just learned that the subject of the documentary Peter Kalmus will be present at the screening Friday. I hope you can come and meet him in person. I remember the first Earth Day. I was in middle school and the concept that we were in relationship with nature and could shape that relationship has been with me ever since. I do some pretty eccentric things to conserve and I'm hoping to learn how to do more.

Sorry if you missed the screening last Friday at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church -- and the appearance by author Peter Kalmus, the subject of the documentary, who addressed the audience afterwards without notes and answered a lot of great questions. As consolation, I found a nine minute speech that Peter gave in Ojai last November on You Tube: When somebody asked Peter how he copes with the overwhelming reality of climate change, he mentioned this brief essay -- "The Best Medicine for My Climate Grief" -- that he wrote for YES! Magazine: www.yesmagazine.org/mental-health/the-best-medicine-for-my-climate-grief-20180809I'm happy to report that Peter sold every copy of his book, "Being the Change: Live Well and Spark a Climate Revolution," in the box that he brought to the church. The books will be read, and the cardboard box no doubt will be repurposed.
