Sharon alerted us to the Wear Orange Weekend events being organized by Everytown for Gun Safety with a post on the message board. Anni bought a blouse for this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil, because she didn't own any orange clothing, and Jeanne wore her ultra-cool t-shirt from the Ahimsa Center at Cal Poly Pomona. At some point, I turned around and there was Zari, holding a sign. Throughout the years, every now and then, Zari will insist on making time from her impossible work schedule to stop at the corner. She joined a dozen regulars this week. We have printed and posted every Defense Department news release announcing the deaths of soldiers, sailors and airmen in our unconstitutional wars during our vigils since October 2011. The Pentagon reported no uniformed casualties in the previous seven days.

I forgot to wear orange but it was great to see Anni, Roberta and Jeanne wearing it when we arrived. I don't usually wear orange either but I did get given a "Girls on the Run" t-shirt that color I was planning on wearing. I'll have to wear that today.

I know that when I get a parking space close to the intersection of Ocean View Boulevard and Honolulu Avenue at 6 p.m., traffic will be light on the streets and sidewalks during that Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil. So it was this week -- as it always is immediately after the school year ends, something I've observed standing on the corner for 13 years while holding a sign. They'll be back later this summer. The peaceniks turned out: 13 people participated in the vigil this week. In the previous seven days, the Department of Defense reported no military deaths in Operation Freedom's Sentinel in Afghanistan, Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq and Syria or in any of the other U.S. operations underway around the world.

My orange shirt from Mom’s Demand Action which I wore at this MPV also served me well the next day, tabling with MDA down on Olvera Street at a community homeless awareness/aid event, urging action for stronger gun regulation and sensible gun safety measures. Very impressive group — well organized, good materials, and they got out at least 50 activists like me, attracting a lot of attention and signups to our cause! And while I have you, looking forward to July ... anyone want to gather at the corner on July 4th for a while? I’m totally open re time, and just throw out one possibility — the exact time whatever Fourth event Trump tries to slap his brand on, and thereby ruin, is being televised. Maybe just 1 sign — CHANGE THE CHANNEL — but the full gamut is always nice to see!!!! This Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil had the biggest turnout in 16 months -- 20 demonstrators. Thirteen regulars were joined by Patrick, a first time participant, along with five high school age gentlemen and one little girl who picked up a sign briefly. The Pentagon announced no U.S. military deaths in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria or anywhere else in the previous seven days. ... anyone want to gather at the corner on July 4th for a while? Hopefully, I'll know by next Friday's vigil. The Trump portion of the Washington, D.C. event is only one hour, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Pacific time.

With the Fourth of July on a Thursday this year, it feels like we're having two holiday weekends. There were fewer vehicles and pedestrians passing us on the corner at this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil, and our turnout was down. Here are my tallies of the demonstrators this month: - June 7 - 13
- June 14 - 13
- June 21 - 20
- June 28 - 10
The weekly average was exactly 14 participants -- the same as May -- after averaging 11 in April and 12 each month in March, February, January and December. We had 13 weekly demonstrators last November and October, 10 in September, 13 in August and 11 in July 2018. Last June, the vigils also averaged 14 participants per week. Tulsi Gabbard mentioned the deaths of two soldiers in combat in Afghanistan at the Democratic presidential debate on Wednesday. On Thursday, the Department of Defense announced their names. We posted a printout of the news release on the utility pole throughout this week's vigil: dod.defense.gov/News/News-Releases/News-Release-View/Article/1888850/department-of-defense-identifies-army-casualties/
