Upcoming Events and Actions
7/29: Show up for Ruth Luevanos at Simi Valley city council meeting
Monday, July 29: 6:00 pm
Council Chamber at Simi Valley City Hall,
2929 Tapo Canyon Road, Simi Valley
As some of you may have heard, Ruth Luevanos, Simi Valley city council member, has faced death threats in response to her July 13 know your rights video www.facebook.com/ruthforsimivalley/videos/2553318378051684/ which critiques the current round of ICE raids and reminds people of their rights. Luevanos is the first Latina city council member to be elected in Simi Valley and her video is clear about supporting undocumented folks in her community. You can read more about the threats here. www.vcstar.com/story/news/local/communities/simi-valley/2019/07/24/progressive-simi-valley-city-council-member-sparks-uproar-ice-related-vid/1771974001/ We know that her opponents are mobilizing to turn people out to condemn her at the Simi Valley City council meeting on Monday, July 29 and so we invite you to support her a the meeting.
Those making these threats are hoping to sow fear that will dampen the work for racial justice that we are all committed to. We need to show up all together to repudiate their attempts to intimidate council member Luevanos.
We invite SURJ members and our partners to show up to the Simi Valley City Council meeting with statements of solidarity and support for council member Luevanos. We expect her critics to show up in force at this city council meeting, so please arrive 30 minutes early at 6 pm to make sure you can find a seat. If you have a SURJ VC blue shirt, please wear it to create a powerful visual.
We also ask you to fill out a speaker card even if you only say one or two sentences of support. Our message is: We support Ruth Luevanos. Hate and death threats have no place here. Feel free to elaborate on why racial justice is important to you.
Please forward this email to others who might be able to attend. We need your help to spread the word. We also welcome other groups to become co-host to our SURJ VC Facebook event.

Invitation from SURJ Bay Area
Legislative Action List
One crucial way we support our partners is by making calls to our legislators to support their criminal justice reform bills. By coordinating our calls at strategic times, we can leverage our activity to have maximum impact.
August represents a key legislative deadline, when bills must pass out of the Assembly/Senate or be tabled for the year.
SURJ Bay Area is trying to get constituents from every congressional district to join the SURJ Bay Area Legislative Action List so we can have the biggest impact together. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdID9z-QuyjOiJ7tLKaovKoJAkdUsU6jCrVptqb4_M818XAnA/viewform
By signing on to this list, you will be sent periodic action alerts -- including during 2-3 key weeks in the legislative year -- asking you to make calls to your local legislators, each action should take no longer than 5 minutes. They'll provide the legislator's name, phone number, and a call script - and all you have to do is make the call.
Can you commit to calling your legislators during your lunchtimes during three key weeks of the year? (it’s that easy!)
Sign up here to add your name to the calling list.
