The sun officially set at 6:33 during this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil, but of course, it disappears behind the Verdugo Hills long before that. The last half hour of the vigil was conducted in the dark, but the many honks, waves and peace signs from the passing vehicles showed that people knew we were there. Daylight Saving Time ends next month, which means that Anni will be bringing her bag of candles along with a portfolio of signs -- as she has done every week for years. Turnout was better than average -- 16 people held signs this week. Special thanks to Peggy and Steve from Northern California and John and Justeen of western Van Nuys, who come to the corner whenever they're in town. We have printed and posted every Defense Department news release announcing the deaths of soldiers, sailors and airmen in our unconstitutional wars during our vigils since October 2011. The Pentagon reported no uniformed casualties in the previous seven days.

Despite the comfortable temperature and the lack of wind, foot and wheel traffic was light at the intersection of Ocean View Boulevard and Honolulu Avenue for this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil, at least for the hour I was there. Two guys in a red pickup truck with big Trump flags waving from the bed drove by us twice. It was good -- they seemed nice, and I've always been a fan of the First Amendment. Two women stopped to tell us that they appreciate us being there every week and they hope to join us soon. And Kathryn Terrien was back after a brief absence, singing and playing guitar through her excellent PA system next to our demonstration. When we left at 7 p.m., a good sized crowd had gathered to watch her perform. Just ten regulars came to the corner this week. In the previous seven days, the Department of Defense reported no military deaths in Operation Freedom's Sentinel in Afghanistan, Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq and Syria or in any of the other U.S. operations underway around the world.

A dozen regulars came to this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil, standing on two patches of grass and sitting on camp chairs on the huge sidewalk in between with our signs. I got to the corner early, expecting most of the conversations would center on the events of the past week. Instead, I mostly talked about baseball and this Saturday's Empty Bowls fundraiser at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church. Kathryn Terrien was back again, making us feel even better.
The Pentagon announced no U.S. military deaths in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria or anywhere else in the previous seven days.

The weather was hot and traffic was light for this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil. Twelve regulars were joined by first timer Debbie -- she had seen us on the corner for many weeks as she drove by. This week, she stopped to talk and hold a sign for a while, saying she'd be back. Here is this month's tallies of vigil participants: - Oct. 4 - 16
- Oct. 11 - 10
- Oct. 18 - 12
- Oct. 25 - 13
The weekly average for October was 13 participants, after averaging 12 in September, August and July, 14 in June and May, 11 in April and 12 each month in March, February, January and December. We had 13 weekly demonstrators last November, the same average as October 2018.
No U.S. military deaths were announced by the Pentagon in the previous seven days. This marks the first month since February that we've posted no printouts of its casualty releases on the utility poll.
