The stalwarts of Montrose Peace Vigil have been big fans of Gary Tyler for the better part of a decade, following his work and his appearances, including a talk at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church. In case you didn't get it, here's an e-mail I received on December 18:
Dear friends,
You are receiving this email because you contributed to the fund created for Gary Tyler to help support him after his release from 42 years of incarceration for a crime he didn't commit. As some of you know, Gary has made great strides in 3 1/2 years of freedom. He is currently employed at a non-profit in LA serving homeless youth. In addition, he speaks regularly in many forums about the death penalty, youth sentencing reform and incarceration issues.
It was announced today that Gary Tyler is a 2019 recipient of a coveted Art Matters fellowship for his ground-breaking artwork in quilt-making and theater! Art Matters is a foundation which annually awards 25 fellowships nationwide to artists pushing aesthetic and social boundaries -- artists nominated by a panel of fellow-artists. It is a great honor!

Gary is a man of many surprises! Though many of you knew of his work leading the Drama Club at Angola Prison, you perhaps did not know that he is also an accomplished quilter. In prison, his quilting talents were used to support the hospice program, in which he was a volunteer for many years. (Photos of these quilts can be viewed by scrolling past the 1st photo in his link.)
We just wanted to share the good news. Your contributions for Gary have helped to provide critical support as he successfully transitions to life outside of prison.
Thank you again and have a safe and happy holiday season,
Gary's support committee (Pam White, Deborah Streit, Bob Zaugh, Paula Litt, and Steve White)
