From my email:
MAYDAY, MAYDAY! We are in a convergence of crises! And we don’t have the luxury of fighting COVID-19 and the climate crisis separately. We must ensure that we have converging solutions.
These are tough, unprecedented, challenging times. And while we find ways to make this new normal work for us, it’s imperative that we keep our activism alive. That’s why I’m asking you to join me and some incredible labor leaders, workers, and union representatives from across the country in our Virtual Fire Drill Friday rally on Friday, May 1, at 11am PT / 2pm ET. Come learn about what a Just Transition is, and why we need to prioritize the rights and needs of workers now in the COVID-19 crisis — just as we’ll need to do as we transition off of fossil fuels.
WHAT: Fire Drill Friday: Virtual Rally WHEN: Friday, May 1 at 11am PT / 2pm ET WHERE: Facebook Live: Join from your computer or phone! RSVP: Get all the info here
We are innovative and resilient. I know we can come out of this crisis with our country stronger, healthier, and safer moving forward — as long as we continue to act alone, together.
JOIN US on May 1 to take part in Fire Drill Fridays, and enact a just transition to a renewable economy that protects workers and communities.
I’ll see you there!

I’m gonna bring a collection box/bag(s) for this to the corner on Friday, and some copies of the announcement to post and hand out. People can just give cash, I’ll take everything donated to CVUMC on Saturday, and mail $$ to Bailey Center.
And speaking of May 1st, looks like an harmonic convergence of labor, peace, just bailout, etc. groups are mobilizing online. We are lucky to have a place to speak out in RL!
______________ The Bailey Human Care Center Donations: This Saturday May 2nd we will be collecting donations for the Bailey Center at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church. We will have a bin out to collect food from 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM outside the Fellowship Hall between the Church and the Education Building. Please enter to drop off your goods from the gate at the lower parking lot and go through to the stairs to the front of the church. Please wear a mask and gloves to drop off your items. And maintain your six feet of social distancing. We want everyone to be safe. These are the items in most need: Canned Goods Tuna Pasta Peanut Butter Cereal Soup No Chocolate or other food that could melt.
We will be collecting every other Saturday as needed. The next Saturday will be May 16th.
If you would like to make a money donation you can send it to the Bailey Center at the Tujunga United Methodist Church directly marked clearly for the Bailey Center. The address and information is on the church website.
The address to drop off the donation is Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church: 2700 Montrose Ave Montrose, California 91020
The Bailey Center is in need of these donations as more people are affected during this time. And their big fundraiser in May with the Post Office collecting food has been cancelled. They serve families, seniors and the homeless.
Please give as you can as Jesus calls us to help the hungry and homeless.

Six of the ten demonstrators who came to the Montrose Peace Vigil on April 17.
This Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil was our seventh vigil observing the emergency pandemic guidelines. I might've been hallucinating underneath my mask, but it seemed to me that even fewer vehicles and pedestrians were out this week. Roberta thought traffic was about the same.
Nonetheless, we got lots of honks, waves, peace signs and other expressions of support from passing vehicles. And we had the first conversations with pedestrians in many weeks -- at a distance, of course. Penny from Burbank stopped to talk for a while -- she had seen us driving by the corner numerous times over the years. She's looking for a place to rent in Montrose and nearby. Later, a gentlemen asked me about the nature of our protest, so I started with our continuing military occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq, and mentioned the U.S. casualties. Then he brought up the hundreds of thousands of civilians who died throughout our 19 years there.
Nine regulars participated in this week's vigil.
Since October 2011, we have printed and displayed every Defense Department news release announcing the deaths of soldiers, sailors and airmen in our many ongoing wars during the vigils. The Pentagon reported no uniformed casualties in the previous seven days.

We appreciate all those who came out. We participated at home asgain this week. Also, I watched Jane Fonda's Zoom Fire Drill Friday Rally on Facebook from 11 am to noon. The event description: MAYDAY MAYDAY! We are in a convergence of crises! We do not have the luxury of fighting the climate crisis and the COVID-19 crisis separately. So how can we ensure that we have converging solutions? Come hear from national thought leaders about what a “Just Transition” is and what it could look like, what that means practically for workers, what life is like in Kern County, California right now in the heart of the oil and gas industry, and what needs to be done to prioritize the health and well-being of workers, labor and unions. Dolores Huerta was one of the labor leaders who spoke with Jane. Next month, June 5, Elizabeth Warren and Lily Tomlin will join Jane. more info: firedrillfridays.com/

Interesting, glad to see we are not alone in continuing to protest for things other than unfettered beach access or getting a tattoo. Wondering if the reopening agitators are being shut down for not having masks, keeping proper distance, or other quarantine-related offenses? www.nytimes.com/2020/05/05/nyregion/nypd-coronavirus.html

New county guidelines allowed certain kinds of businesses to start offering curbside pick up on Friday, but if stores like Marshalls and Starbucks added any traffic to the intersection of Ocean View Boulevard and Honolulu Avenue compared to previous weeks under the pandemic restrictions, it wasn't apparent to me. The pet grooming shop was open, but should not have been. The frozen yogurt shop had signs in the window announcing its reopening on May 14. How's that going to work? I assume self service will be over.
Eight peaceniks came to the corner for this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil.
Our friend Mike Morgan, the caretaker of the Vietnam War Memorial, took a photo of our socially distanced group to send to street performer Katherine Terrien, who we miss dearly. Mike reports that she is still employed in her day job, but she misses performing for the past two months, and counting.
We printed the Pentagon news release linked below in a large font, as always, and taped the page to the utility pole throughout the vigil. Sgt. Curry died Monday in a "non-combat-related incident" in Iraq, but not from COVID-19, according to Stars and Stripes.

The light traffic persisted throughout this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil. The only business to open nearby since last week was the frozen yogurt shop, which was taking carryout orders at the door. I saw very few customers despite the neon OPEN sign. Eleven vigil stalwarts participated this week on two corners of the intersection, including Jim, who stood with his big American flag and an IMPEACH sign from 4 p.m. until Anni and I arrived at 5:25. Jim is single handedly doubling our usual vigil time. In the previous seven days, the Department of Defense reported no military deaths in Operation Freedom's Sentinel in Afghanistan, Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq and Syria or in any of the many other U.S. operations underway around the world.
