It's only Wednesday but it is February. I'm looking forward to Friday with friends and fiends.

Yikes. The computer model on the Channel 5 weather puts the center of Friday's storm over Montrose at 6:34 p.m. It's only a prediction, but it appears that we'll have rain on our vigil for the first time since Feb. 6, 2009 -- and only the second time for Anni and me since we started coming to the corner in August 2006. Last year, the showers were light though steady without wind. Under a hat, rain jacket and umbrella, I braved the wet like someone who lives elsewhere, like Manitoba, not a semi-desert in constant drought.
There are benefits to a rain vigil, even if you can only stand it for a few minutes. The counter-protesters will no doubt be absent again, so all of the honks will be for us. And we'll make a bigger impression on the motorists by demonstrating our commitment to peace -- and action.

I'm sorry to confess to being a light-weight this rainy eve, BUT, I did show up standing 'til I was soaked, back to the car to "warm and dry", then back to our corner...too chilled, I left the stalwart strong hearts, 1/2 hour early...Brian will report the facts (head count) and any other tidbits.

I'm so proud of the 11 of us who took a stand in the rain for this Friday's vigil that I'm going to list everyone, something I've never done before. - Anni
- Brian
- Bruce
- Cynthia
- Jeanne
- Jim
- Louisa
- Michael
- Mike
- Nancy
- Roberta
Anni braved the first half of the vigil, when it rained hard at times. I was there for the last 45 minutes, which settled into a hard drizzle, comfortable without gloves. The only casualties were at least two signs rendered unreadable by the relentless wet. Thanks to Mike for bringing his big, bright laminated signs -- and to all of the drivers who slowed down, honked and waved. Cynthia led Jeanne, Jim and me in singing "The Star Spangled Banner" and Queen's "We Are the Champions."

11 of America's free and brave withstood bombing rain on the corner ! And Brian named them, so that they become more real on that corner in my imagination !
The reason I did not show up was I couldn't think of something poignant & clever to paint on my umbrella. (just kiddin', but do need to do that). Actually poor Tony & I were attending to family stuff you don't wanna hear about.....
THANK YOU, OH BEAUTIFUL ELEVEN, for holding the fort (oops, another military metaphor!)!!!

Nineteen peaceful persons -- ranging in age from the kindergarten-size to those of us in our 60's -- participated in Friday's vigil. The last time that many came to the corner was Sept. 25, a very hot evening that continued on Gourmet-a-Go-Go's patio for a group dinner.
I told Roberta that the total was 18 because I forgot to write down Jim, who came later than usual. The returning vigil members numbered a solid 13. Then four kids waved signs and danced, before and after their frozen yogurt fix. And a couple just stopped to thank us at first. The man talked about both long wars and the lack of public outcry, until his companion said, "Hey, we're staying -- give me a sign!"

You guys are doing an excellent job recruiting for peace. There were only 7 or 8 of us at Broadway & Brand last night, all old regulars - well semi-regular!

The weather forecasts said rain was possible by late afternoon Friday -- and the county sheriff and Glendale police spent the day trying to convince people in 200 homes nearby to evacuate by 4 p.m. -- but the vigil was dry and, luckily, it hasn't rained much since. Tonight's participants at the corner numbered in the double digits and all bore familiar faces: - Feb. 5 - 11 (rain)
- Feb. 12 - 19
- Feb. 19 - 10
I'd wondered whether our fair weather friends on the opposite corner would be there, but a few showed up with the mild temperature, outnumbered by their flags. The many honks and waves from drivers and passengers for us felt especially warm this week.
