It has been a while since Montrose Peace Vigil and Crescenta Valley UMC have collaborated. With the reopening of public spaces and the appointment of a new pastor, we may be on the cusp of a social action revival. Reverend Denyse Barnes takes a social justice, community building approach to her ministry. She will divide her time between our congregation and leading the Conference ministries on Immigration and LGBTQ+ Advocacy. She has already heard a lot about MPV and is looking forward to getting to know us. Rev. Denyse will be giving her first sermon at CVUMC next Sunday, July 4th, at 10 AM. If you would like to be there to welcome her in the spirit of collaborative peace building, please come to 2700 Montrose Avenue. Barb and the band will be there, too. Your presence will be most welcome.

Thanks to Jeanne for inviting us to Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church's first service with Rev. Denyse and giving us the opportunity to meet her.
Neither Anni nor I are Christians, but we've had a home at the church for more than a decade. This Community section is a fine record of CVUMC's outreach and engagement over the years with folks who aren't members. It was wonderful to hang out again -- in person! -- with so many people we've been missing for the past 15 months because of the pandemic. And once again hearing the church band led by Barb with principal singer Ricky play live, as God intended.
We look forward to more threads about CVUMC events and activism in the near future. You can also keep up with the church on its excellent website: www.cvumc.org/

What a wide ranging, thoroughly enjoyable interview! Besides learning more about Rev. Denyse, which was my goal, I especially appreciated hearing that Jesus wasn't telling people to just help the poor -- he wanted them to eliminate systems of oppression.

As most of you know, our friend Jeanne is lay leader at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church, often filling in for Rev. Denyse and her predecessors as pastor. In this Sunday's sermon, Jeanne talks about the courage to try things for the first time, using her first Montrose Peace Vigil in 2007 as an example, then adds a quick practical meditation exercise to open your heart to light. Before that, she provides a gentle history of our nation's war crimes in the 21st century. Here's the video of the entire service on You Tube:
Jeanne's sermon starts at 28:40. We enjoyed the whole thing because can never get enough of the church band. Check out their version of "Eyes on the Prize" for God's sake.
