Jean raises the important point of reverence. I think if an individual's demeanor is reverent while carrying a sign with a war-dead face/name on it, that's Okay.
On second thought --appropos of news shows that put faces on U.S. soldier Iraq war-dead, our Peace Corner is not the venue of Ted Koppel's air of "neutral" journalism or of Nancy Grace's hot air of Red, White, & Blue Santa Claus -- a "safe" venue. Would it be irreverent for us to display faces/names of someone's beloved war-dead who may not want ot be represented by us? Need to get their consent--especially if local?
How easily we the U.S.A. create phony wars that wreak horrific death and destruction and the loss of our soul.
Tony says we just need larger signs with larger print that say
STOP THE GODDAMN WAR !!!
How to get fellow Americans and those in our community to kneel themselves into thinking, really thinking, and into caring, really caring? As Jean said "there's lots of food for thought here."

This is a great idea, to honor a particular soldier, and Linda's wording is excellent. If someone will bring a picture, actually all of us can bring pictures, I'll bring the sign!

We are all grateful to Linda for proposing that we display the faces of soldiers who died in Iraq and Afghanistan because it looks like it's going to happen. My sister is a member of the Montrose Peace Vigil -- not just the message board -- because she stood with us on the corner on the last Friday she was up here. Off the board, Anni and I got to discuss Linda's idea with her last weekend when we were down in the low desert, and I talked to Jeanne and Sigrid at the vigil. Roberta was out of town, yet she came up with the same target date we had mentioned when she posted in another thread today. By the way, Memorial Day is being observed this year on the old fashioned date, May 31. Jean raises the important point of reverence. I think if an individual's demeanor is reverent while carrying a sign with a war-dead face/name on it, that's Okay.

We certainly don't need anybody's consent, but Sigrid raises great questions. Imagine if a relative of a dead soldier from Montrose walked by while we were holding his or her picture. I feel the duty to learn more about the people so I will be able to represent them with a full heart and at least a few brain cells.

Roberta was back from her brief trip bearing new signs, including one quoting Linda from this message board last week about observing a special vigil featuring the faces of soldiers who died in Iraq and Afghanistan. No kids joined us on the corner this Friday, but Rhea participated for the first time and helped us crack the attendance totals for the previous two weeks: - Apr. 2 - 9
- Apr. 9 - 11
- Apr. 16 - 11
- Apr. 23 - 12
I just heard about the Peace Jam, but Anni and I wouldn't have been able to go anyway since we'll be out of town. Co-sponsored by a wonderful local group whose events we've enjoyed before, Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace, the Intergenerational Peace Event starts with a family program at noon at USC United University Church, followed at 3 p.m. by music, speakers including Mike Farrell and a march. If you're reading this today, April 24, click on the flyer in this link to enlarge it for more information: www.icujp.org/

This time of year, the sun setting over the Verdugo Hills bores into the eyeballs of westbound drivers on Honolulu Avenue during the weekly vigil. The winds polished the sky this Friday, but motorists still waved, flashed peace signs and shouted thanks at us while pulling on their sunvisors. On the opposite side of the street, traffic was unusually heavy -- a dozen cars stopped at every red light. You can have great conversations with people while they wait when the weather's warm and their windows are down. Attendance was up, thanks to three enthusiastic youths who walked up and hoisted signs, and old friends Nadine and Valentino, who took the rest of our flyers promoting the screening of "Rethink Afghanistan" by the Glendale Peace Vigil next Friday to pass out in Pasadena this weekend. And Cynthia was back, looking great and making us laugh. My official census for the month: - Apr. 2 - 9
- Apr. 9 - 11
- Apr. 16 - 11
- Apr. 23 - 12
- Apr. 30 - 14
The average for April was 11.4, compared to 14.3 in March, 12.8 in February and 13.2 in January.
