I don't think so, Sharon. He only went after the NO RECALL signs and the folks holding them. No peace signs were any part of his "attack." I was in his face "filming him" and holding my 'KNOW PEACE' sign the whole time. Truly none of it made sense.

I asked John first thing this morning if it’s bad to say “Live by the sword, die by the sword” re yesterday’s troop and civilian deaths, U.S. and Afghan . His panicked answer was “Did you already post that? .” I haven’t and our discussion ensued clarifying that the swords are commanded to be drawn by our top leaders, and not to blame those holding the swords. To me it is obvious, but I guess needs to be said. I’m working on how to say it…..

A peaceful moment at the Montrose Peace Vigil on August 20, 2021. Despite last week's brief ruckus, this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil was entirely peaceful. Perhaps that was because there were four Glendale Police officers on duty at the intersection for the first hour of the vigil while 23 recall opponents -- including our state Assemblymember Laura Friedman -- demonstrated alongside vigil regulars. We look forward to standing with our new friends for the next two Fridays before the election. Fifteen vigil regulars came to the northwest corner this week. Also, the wonderful musicians Korey and Tom of the roots Americana band Ikes Creek were back after their first appearance during a vigil on June 18, although Korey had joined us to demonstrate about five years ago. Because they set up early, the Crescenta Valley Weekly's 2019 Entertainer of the Year Katherine Terrien, who normally occupies that spot, was unable to busk. So she stayed and held Anni's Know Justice, Know Peace sign for more than an hour. I've been counting everybody who demonstrates since 2008, when two guys with Ron Paul for President signs joined us, and later throughout 2015, when lots of folks from Glendale for Bernie took part. If I only counted vigil regulars, we would have averaged 14 peaceniks per week this month. Here are the combined weekly totals of all participants: - Aug. 6 - 21
- Aug. 13 - 34
- Aug. 20 - 26
- Aug. 27 - 38
This month's weekly average rounds to 30 participants, after averaging 11 in July, 17 in June, 11 in May, 10 in April, 9 in March, 8 in February, 7 in January and December, 8 in November, 10 in October, 9 in September and 11 in August 2020. Twelve peaceniks had been our average attendance for many years before the pandemic. Everybody knows about the 13 service members who were killed by a suicide bomber in Kabul on Thursday. As of now, the Department of Defense has not officially released their names -- its policy is to identify casualties 24 hours after next of kin have been notified, so it appears that there was some delay in reaching all of their families. We will display a large-type printout of the news release to honor them at the next Montrose Peace Vigil.

Back in 2012, we posted Pentagon death announcements on the flagpole next to the Vietnam War memorial.
For the past several years, we've taped the Defense Department's news releases on the utility pole where most of us stand on the northwest corner of Ocean View Boulevard and Honolulu Avenue. But I may post a three-page printout on the flagpole next Friday like we used to do.
Saturday morning, the Pentagon released the names of the 13 service members from three branches who died in Kabul on Thursday:
www.defense.gov/Newsroom/Releases/Release/Article/2756011/dod-identifies-marine-corps-navy-and-army-casualties/
Thursday was the worst day for U.S. casualties in Afghanistan since August 2011, two months before we started honoring every soldier, Marine and Airman killed in our wars during Friday's Montrose Peace Vigils. Initially, we reported as many as a dozen deaths each week. After Trump signed a withdrawal agreement with the Taliban in February 2020, there were no more U.S. combat deaths in Afghanistan because the Taliban kept that part of the deal. These 13 service members were something special in American military history -- they died saving the lives of civilians.
In contrast to our paper postings, there's a brass plaque on the Vietnam War memorial for the last local man killed there in December 1972. He was a pilot who was shot down during the worst U.S. bombing campaign in our entire history, just days before Nixon finally ended the bombing -- and the war.

The next week a woman driving by the Eagle Rock Vigil shouted at the "no recall" signs: "HE"S A TYRANT!!"
This past weekend weekend Stacy and I were driving through Glendale with a "no recall" sign on the car. One lady in another vehicle started ranting hysterically, and just a block further an elderly man flipped us off. On the west side people have reacted positively.
I always thought someone might lose it because of my Black Lives Matter sign. I never expected people to be so set off by signs against the recall.
