I have a lot of gall running that picture after the Dodgers just won their only game against the Angels this season but I could not resist. I saw it tonight in the top row of Google Images when you search for "Dodgers," and the guy who posted it -- you have to assume it was a man -- invites everyone to use it. The Dodgers broke a six-game losing streak -- and an eight-game losing streak against American League teams. Four days after my last baseball rant, they're still in third place, three games back in the National League West, yet only half a game behind the Hated Ones. Because the game counts in the standings, I will have to watch the Yankees in Chavez Ravine after the vigil. The Dodgers and Yankees should only meet in a World Series. as God intended. My only consolation will be the sight of American League pitchers trying to bat.

It's ironic that Brian and I skipped the forum on U.S. sponsored torture only to watch the Dodgers vs. Yankees.
Even Bernaaard was upset. He planted his bottom on the NY Times and began a wailing yelp to end all blues...do the Dodgers hear his mournful cry?

Despite their 12-5 loss against the Snake Team in Arizona Friday night, the Dodgers are in second place in the National League's best division, the West, three and a half games back but only half a game ahead of the Iraqis. Best of all, the Hated Ones -- who were swept by the Dodgers at home this week -- are now in fourth place, tonight losers of seven games in a row and six and a half behind the Daddy Team.
The Cincinnati Reds still own first place in the Central Division, a game and a half above the Bird Team.
Only eight games remain before the All Star break. God save the National League.

Of course, I'm ecstatic that the National League won its first All Star Game since Bill Clinton's first term. All four Dodgers on the roster played, and although Kuo made an error and was charged with the only (unearned) run, Ethier and Furcal contributed defensively to the victory and Broxton got the save. And I found myself rooting for a San Francisco Giant, Brian Wilson, pitching to some guy named Elvis. I love baseball because it allows me to indulge in the blind loyalty, prejudices and traditionalism I'd never tolerate in myself when it comes to personal relations or politics -- and to remain a kid while rooting for a 124 year old organization that's superior because the pitchers bat and the Dodgers broke the color barrier.

I swore I would wait until the Dodgers won another game before posting again in this thread, but they've lost six in a row since the All Star break, the last two to the Hated Ones -- and they're in fourth place in the National League West, six games behind the Daddy Team.
You'll read about Tuesday night's game elsewhere. Allow me to add: Aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhh!

The story is on mlb.com under Ken Gurnick's byline so it must be true: Manny Ramirez is going to the White Sox and the Dodgers aren't getting anybody for him. Can't say I'm sorry he's leaving the team, especially after watching him being ejected after the first pitch of his pinch hit at bat with the bases loaded Sunday afternoon in Colorado. But to get nothing for him on waivers? ...the Dodgers are in fourth place in the National League West, six games behind the Daddy Team. At the close of business on Aug. 29, the Dodgers are still in fourth place, but ten games behind the Daddy Team and five behind the Hated Ones. The Dodgers could have claimed third place from the Iraqis if they had won instead of lost two out of three games against them this weekend. I started to get interested in the wild card race when the Dodgers were only five back last week but, geez, they're six and a half back now with four teams ahead of them, their record only three games above .500. It's almost September, time perhaps to switch allegiances to the Reds, three games up in the NL Central.

We the Peaceniks for Reds welcome you, Roberta and Bruce Thank you, Roberta, and Bruce especially. It's gratifying to see the first baseball team back in contention all season after a such a long absence from the top of the National League standings. Wow, it's already September, and the Reds are eight games ahead of the Cardinals in the Central division with 29 to play -- they own the best record in the league. The Braves and Phillies are battling for the East. In my beloved NL West, the Padres have lost seven in a row, so they only lead the Giants by three games. Needless to say, I'm rooting for San Diego every day. The Dodgers, who just don't matter anymore, can help by sweeping the Hated Ones in Chavez Ravine this weekend. I'll be watching.

Needless to say, I'm rooting for San Diego every day. Yikes, it's almost true. My heart always wants the Dodgers to win. But when Scott Podsednik hit a two-run homer in the seventh to cut the Padres' lead to 3-2, my head started to hurt. The Giants had already won, so if the Padres lost their 11th game in a row, they'd be virtually tied for first place in the National League West. The Padres won. And the Dodgers record sank to .500 for the first time since May 12. It gets more complicated. Now I have to root for the Rockies in their series against the Reds, hoping they'll help prevent the Giants from taking the West. The Rockies won tonight, but the Reds are still six games ahead in the Central division. If the Giants win the pennant, I'll be forced to root for an American League team in the World Series like I did in 2002 and 1989, which wasn't so hard because they faced the Angels and the A's (and lost both times). But what would I do if the Yankees made it?

Woe is me. I had to stop watching in the fifth inning when the Giants got an 8-2 lead over the Dodgers. The Hated Ones went on to take first place in the National League West by half a game because the Padres had already lost to the Cardinals. The Reds lost, but their fans should find solace in their team being seven games ahead in the Central division with only 15 left to play. Too bad I live in the West. Woe is me. I don't know who to turn to for help. The Rockies are pretty hot, winning eight of their last ten games, but they're two and a half back. With the Padres playing so poorly -- unless they're facing the Dodgers -- Colorado might be my only hope for a stress-free postseason.
