The good folks of the Glendale Peace Vigil started gathering at the corner of Brand and Broadway before the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The Montrose Peace Vigil began uphill and up north three years later. Despite meeting at the same time every Friday, our groups have intersected at each other's intersections -- and for other community causes and activities, especially their great events. It pays to visit the Glendale Peace Vigil website from time to time. I just noticed that they're screening "Rethink Afghanistan" at the Glendale Central Library on Friday, May 7, with a discussion to follow. You'll find the details in the links from the homepage: www.glendalepeacevigil.org/

Some of us at the Montrose Peace Vigil talked about putting on a screening of "Rethink Afghanistan," but it's the Glendale Peace Vigil who's actually doing it -- and more -- next Friday, May 7, at the Glendale Central Library, where they've held other successful events. Local progressive organizations will set up tables for half an hour before the documentary, which will be followed by an open discussion. This page on the Glendale Peace Vigil's website covers everything, even parking: www.glendalepeacevigil.org/?q=node/101

This is my last chance to tout the Glendale Peace Vigil's screening of "Rethink Afghanistan," followed by an audience discussion, this Friday, May 7. Doors open at 7 p.m. at the Glendale Central Library, 222 E. Harvard St. in downtown Glendale, Calif. You'll find more details on the GPV's website: www.glendalepeacevigil.org/?q=node/101The documentary is readily available online and on DVD, but this has to be the best way to view it.

One of the best evenings we had last summer was volunteering at the Glendale Peace Vigil booth at the city of Glendale's Cruise Night. Anni and I hope to return Saturday, July 17, from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. because we had so much fun giving away prizes with peace themes -- for free! -- to everybody on California Street near Brand Boulevard. Thanks to the folks of Glendale Peace Vigil for mentioning Montrose Peace Vigil along with the co-sponsoring Glendale Education/Social Justice Advocates on their website: www.glendalepeacevigil.org/Chubby Checker will headline the musical acts performing around the corner. And I just learned that our friend Ray, who's participated in several vigils over the years, will play at 6 p.m. I'll ask Ray for the details. Meanwhile, here's the city's webpage for its 17th annual event: www.glendalecruisenight.com/

This is the post that I wrote last year, elsewhere on this message board, after the Glendale Cruise Night: We had a fantastic time hanging out at the Glendale Peace Vigil's booth at the Cruise Night festival centered on Brand Boulevard Saturday night. Every spinner was a winner, and everybody of all ages who I dealt with really seemed to enjoy their gifts. And they were great -- a beautiful variety of t-shirts, books, DVD's, tote bags, buttons, bumper stickers, bookmarks, balloons and GPV-imprinted pencils, almost everything communicating a progressive theme or message.
No money changed hands. Anybody tall enough to spin the prize wheel had the chance, for instance, to take home a child-size t-shirt displaying a peace symbol, very popular. Young mothers chose the stickers with the entire First Amendment for their kids. The wonderful folks of the Glendale Peace Vigil took care to fully stock their booth -- and they generated a lot of goodwill for peace in the community. Needless to say, Anni and I are doing everything we can to return to the purple canopy on California Street between Brand Boulevard and Maryland Avenue on Saturday, July 17, from 5:30 and 10:30 p.m. Also, our friend Ray will be playing drums with Andy Roth's Stunt Road around the corner and down the block at 6 p.m. They're breaking in a new bass player and rehearsing these songs, any of which could make the setlist, and Ray says there could be some surprises: - Brown Eyed Girl
- Brown Sugar
- Folsom Prison Blues
- Hands To Yourself
- Have You Ever Seen The Rain
- Honky Tonk Women
- I Saw Her Standing There
- I’ve Just Seen A Face
- Johnny B. Goode
- Knockin' on Heaven's Door
- Last Train To Clarksville
- Mustang Sally
- One Way Out
- Pink Cadillac
- Pride and Joy
- Suzie Q
- Sweet Home Alabama
- The Way
- The Weight
- Wild Night
- Wonderful Tonight
- Wooly Bully
Great selections, but if Ray leaves out "Sweet Home Alabama," that would be fine with me.

Thanks so much to the Montrose Peace Vigil for supporting the Cruise Night booth. It should be a great day. And it was! Nancy, Sharon, Bill and the other Glendale Peace Vigil members run the best organized and most soul satisfying community outreach booth I can imagine. So it was even better to be there. Like last year, every spinner was a winner -- and an absolute pleasure to talk to. The line at the prize wheel was a dozen deep until late in the evening. Where I sat, the peace symbol buttons and "War Is Not the Answer" bumper stickers were the most popular. Higher up on the prize ladder, Roberta's ceramic pins and peace-theme baby clothes were especially appreciated.
