Dear Friends,
It has been eighteen months since our last Sunday morning hike. I remember well March 22, 2020. The usually quiet Deukmejian Park was swarming with people who had just been denied access to their gyms and were desperately seeking exercise. We agreed that it was best to take a break and stay safe until we understood the pandemic better. Eventually vaccines became available, stay at home orders lifted, and we said goodbye to Pastor Paul and hello to Rev. Denyse. With that transition well underway, it is time to head for the hills again. Starting on Sunday, October 10, at 8 AM, we will meet in the parking lot at Deukmajian Wilderness Park, 3429 Markridge Road, Glendale.
We will walk for the first hour and then gather to read a selection of scripture. We will spend about a half hour journaling about what we read and then finish up with a conversation sharing our thoughts. Those who have participated in this hiking ministry have been inspired by the beautiful natural setting and the way it brings the words to life. We have enjoyed hearing each other’s unique insights. Please bring something to write with, anything you want to eat or drink, and a chair to use for the writing part of the morning. Because we will be outdoors and will be social distancing, masks will be optional. All are welcome. If the hike is too strenuous, there are level paths at the park. There are ramps from the parking lot to the field where we gather after the hike.
Peace, Jeanne Lavieri

I had such a good time last Sunday. The fresh air, plants and rocks we hadn't seen for a while. And lively, interesting, in depth conversation about a few paragraphs from the Bible. I always come away with a fresh look at old thoughts...and maybe even a few new thoughts. Hope you can make it soon.
Sunday, October 17th, at 8 AM, we will meet in the parking lot at Deukmajian Wilderness Park, 3429 Markridge Road, Glendale.

Yes, Walk and Word will be the first thing on my Halloween agenda. It's a great way to start any day. Sadly we don't do Walk and Word on the 1st Sunday of the month. So that means no Walk and Word on November 7th.Sunday, October 31st, at 8 AM, we will meet in the parking lot at Deukmajian Wilderness Park, 3429 Markridge Road, Glendale

I plan to do Walk and Word every 2nd Sunday in the month that I am in town, when the collectors/hoarders are buying each other’s rummage at the Rose Bowl and blocking my access to the Aquatic Center. Greetings, Friends,
Our Sunday morning hikes at Deukmejian Wilderness Park were a joy in October and we are expecting more of the same for November. It seemed appropriate to begin our restart with Genesis. The short hikes reacquainted our senses with the sights, smells, and sounds of the mountain. The words on the page were animated after our walk. We saw living creatures such as deer grazing on acorns. We heard and felt the flight of birds "in the dome of the sky” as crows swooped within an arm’s length of our heads. Being on Mt. Lukens is a great way to get close to the dome of the sky. We were inspired by a nurturing form of “dominion” as an intergenerational team hauled water up the mountain to pour on young oak trees.
In November, we’ll spend a few more days in Genesis and then return to mark where we left off in March 2020. We’ll be starting at 8 AM on November 14, 21, and 28.
I hope to see you soon.
Peace, Jeanne L.

Dear Friends, We have enjoyed three months of Sunday mornings at Deukmejian Wilderness Park. It was wonderful to reacquaint ourselves with the sights, sounds and smells of the mountain. We found shelter from the wind at some benches protected by walls and saturated with sunshine. Recently we welcomed the return of the sound of water tumbling in the creek. Those sensory pleasures and the exercise open our hearts and minds to whatever Scripture reading is chosen for the day. Our conversations have been thoughtful and often leave us with more questions than answers.
Friends of the park have invested in a glorious twenty six foot panoramic mosaic mural that portrays the flora and fauna and terrain of the mountain. From a distance, it looks like photorealism; close up we see distinct fragments of colored glass. The artist, Hannah Maximova, is local. Here’s a link to a CV Weekly article with more information. It is heartening to see so much appreciation of this wilderness treasure in our community. Further evidence that it is valued can be seen in the near full parking lot at 8 AM on Sundays. Hikers come from near and far to hit the trails.
We have been reading excerpts from the Gospel of Mark. There was sufficient curiosity about Jesus’ walking on water, so we plan to divert to Matthew and John in the coming weeks to compare their versions of the story. If this rain keeps up, the texts may become very relevant.
If you have been considering joining in the hike and journaling, I encourage you to give it a try.
We will meet in the parking lot at 8 AM on January 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th. Meeting outdoors should greatly lower the risk of contagion and we will socially distance while we’re there. Feel free to contact me with questions.
Blessings, Jeanne L.

Having missed last week, I'm looking forward to tomorrow's Walk and Word. Bright and early in the lovely morning freshness. Maybe even learn a thing or two. Ahhhhhh. Perfect.

We are still enjoying all the early morning treats Deukmejian Park has to offer. And after our 1 hour sojourn up and around the canyon we return to a shady corner to read a few chosen paragraphs from the Bible. We mix those words with that morning's walk (and all those sensations we can include) and write down any thoughts or questions that come to mind. We then take turns sharing with each other. What a great way to start off a Sunday...and, I might add, a whole week.

Hello Friends,
I send this to you on the eve of Summer Solstice. Spring on Mt. Lukens has provided an ever-changing tapestry of light, color and texture as plants sent out new shoots and then bright blossoms. The photos attached below only begin to show the sights we have seen.
We continue to work our way through Mark, taking a gentle pace that matches our hiking speed. The one hour climb and descent at Deukmejian Wilderness Park never fails to open our minds to receive the words on the page. That was especially true for me one Sunday in May when we read Mark 11:12 - “A man planted a vineyard, put a fence around it…,” while sitting in the shade of the grapevines planted and tended by the Stone Barn Vineyard Conservancy. I moved past the literal association to thoughts about the wondrous planet we have been given as a home, and our role to acknowledge that gift and to give back a portion of our blessings in the form of care. These Sunday morning encounters restore my connection to Creation.
You are invited to join us on the Walk and Word at 8 AM on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, (and sometimes 5th) Sundays of each month. We meet in the parking lot of Deukmejian Wilderness Park and walk for one hour and then read, write and share for another hour. Come and tend to your connection with Creation. Please let me know if you have any questions. Peace and Love, Jeanne L.
