Apparently it's just coincidence that the Yippie "invasion" of Disneyland fell on the anniversary of Hiroshima. Fifty-two years ago about 200 Yippies showed up for a "hang-out" at Disneyland. A list of activities was announced (e.g., Black Panther Breakfast at Aunt Jemima's Pancake House and Liberation of Tinkerbell from Sleeping Beauty's Castle), but it was nothing more than comedy as opposed to actual events.
In the early afternoon Disneyland's management made a press conference expressing gratification about the Yippie's overall behavior. But a few hours later a small altercation on Main Street prompted cops from all over Orange County to flood out from backstage where they had been waiting in riot gear, and violence and mass arrests ensued. Some Yippies threw flower at the police.
The event had already attracted a lot of attention because there had not been a big Yippie event on the west coast. The heavy-handed police violence drew even more attention.
