This Friday, September 2nd, The Topanga Peace Alliance hosts a special showing of the documentary KING CORN, a feature documentary about two friends, one acre of corn, and the subsidized crop that drives our fast-food nation. In King Corn, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis move to the heartland to learn where their food comes from. With the help of friendly neighbors, Federal subsidies, genetically modified seeds, synthetic fertilizer, and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America's most-productive, most-subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil. But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat-and how we farm.
The film shows how industrialization in corn has all but eliminated the image of the family farm, a trend reflecting the industrialization of the North American food system. We see how decisions relating to which crops are grown and how they are grown are based on government manipulated economic considerations rather than their true economic, environmental, or social ramifications. After the program we will discuss the film, additional aspects of industrial subsidized farming and what we can do to change the current system.
The documentary ought to be a “required viewing by anyone planning to visit a supermarket, fast-food joint, or their own refrigerator.” – Washington Post.
