On Friday, October 7th, The Topanga Peace Alliance will host a special First Friday program featuring long time Peace Activist, Conscientious Objector, and author of the new book “I Refuse to Kill” Francesco Da Vinci. Francesco is an author, journalist, nonviolent activist, public speaker, and documentary film producer. You might ask, why now for a ‘60s memoir? It is because the issues raised in “I Refuse to Kill” are today’s top issues - social justice, police brutality, government surveillance, persecution of nonviolent activists, and war versus the nonviolent resolution of conflict. Peter Yarrow, from Peter, Paul and Mary, says of the book: “This amazing timely story confirms that one person, acting with courage and conviction, can successfully oppose war and help change a part of history. Francesco Da Vinci’s story reminds us that acts of conscience are never pursued in vain.” During our evening with Francesco, he will go over his story and connect it to how important today’s movement for non-violence and social justice is, just as it was during the time of the Viet Nam War, while paying tribute to conscientious objectors, past and present. Francesco encourages interaction during his presentation, which should make for an engaging and interesting evening. His book is available from the link at www.irefusetokill.com/ .
For more than 20 years, Francesco was also a celebrity portrait photographer with Getty Images. Publications displaying Francesco’s work include The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Newsweek, Time, and LIFE Magazine. Currently, Francesco lives and works in Los Angeles, where he is developing a documentary film based on “I Refuse to Kill.” The film will promote social justice, nonviolence, and altruism.
We will open the Zoom event at around 7:15. The main program will begin at 7:30. Before the program, we will have announcements regarding upcoming events and actions for peace and social justice. We will enable video so that we can optionally see each other if you choose to enable your camera.
