After this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil, there are only four more weeks before Daylight Saving Time ends. Already, the middle patch of dirt on the corner -- which the sun blasted for the entire 90 minutes most of the summer -- is entirely in shade by the vigil's 5:30 start time. The official L.A. sunset was 6:29 but the sun sank behind the Verdugo Hills by 6 p.m. where we stood. It was dark before quitting time at 7. We will have to break the candles out of storage soon. As a reminder, we stand on the northwest corner of Ocean View Boulevard and Honolulu Avenue near the Vietnam War memorial in Montrose, CA 91020 every Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. without regard to the weather or holidays -- we haven't missed a vigil since January 2006. Please stop by sometime if you can. The regulars who turned out this week were glad to see Janice back on the corner after a long absence. Arriving in order of appearance were Anni, me, Roberta, Dennis, Russell, Janice and Jeanne by 6 p.m., followed by Mike, Frannie, Nancy and Jim. With a total of 11 participants, we had a solid presence on two patches of dirt for an hour then various conversations continued past the official 7 p.m. end time. Since October 2011, we have printed and displayed every Defense Department news release announcing the deaths of soldiers, Marines, sailors and Airmen in our many ongoing military operations around the world. The Pentagon reported no uniformed U.S. casualties in the previous seven days.

Anni stayed home during this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil for the first time in years after getting side effects from the bivalent Covid booster she had Thursday. She's better now. Anni was missed by the 13 regulars who came to the corner, our best turnout since July 8. In order of appearance: Roberta, me, Dennis, Jeanne, Russell, Frannie, Bruce, Mary, Mike, Justeen, John, Jim and Janice.
Standing together in the middle of the wide corner, we had a big presence, which might explain all of the honks from passing vehicles and the smiles, waves and nods from pedestrians.
In the previous seven days, the Department of Defense reported no military deaths in Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq and Syria or in any of the other named U.S. operations underway around the world.

Credit another great turnout by the regulars for all of the goodwill we received from passersby at this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil. We had a solid contingent with signs and flags facing traffic while lining the curb in the center of the wide corner, a group on the sidewalk not far from the Vietnam War memorial and others standing on the smaller dirt patch next to the frozen yogurt store.
Roberta and John the Realtor were there by 5:30, and Anni and I arrived five minutes later. Soon Dennis, Frannie, Russell, Jeanne and Terry joined us, with Janice, Bruce, Mary and Jim arriving around dusk -- by 6:30 these days. Total participants: 13 peaceniks.
The Department of Defense reported no uniformed casualties in the previous seven days.
