I stopped by the Fire House on Tuesday - a teen center in a former fire station - hence the name. It's on the grounds of St. Luke's of the Mountains Episcopal Church in La Crescenta and is sponsored by the CV Drug and Alcohol Prevention Coalition. It's for students from Crescenta Valley HS, Clark Magnet HS and Rosemont Middle School and is currently open Tuesdays from 6 to 9 pm. They have one room with couches and a card table, another with a pool table and a Foosball, and a third for homework and crafts. They serve buffet dinner and there's a kitchen. It takes three adult volunteers and three youth counselors to staff it when open. There were about 25 or 30 kids there when I dropped in on Jan. 11. They're planning on being open Thursday mornings from 7:15 to 8:30 am for Rosemont students due to the late school start on Thursdays. They would also like to be open Friday evenings up until 10 pm or even later. Of course, they'll be able to open more frequently if there are more volunteers. Please contact Mary O'Keefe at Mary@cvweekly.com if you'd like to volunteer to help.
I copied the above from a message I sent to Glendale Education/Social Justice Advocates and I thought some here might be interested too. The Fire House office had a supply of the Foundation for a Drug Free World pamphlets produced by the Scientology related group - I don't know if any of the kids actually take them - they're pretty lame. I don't know if Scientologists are among the volunteers but, in any case, I'd love to see more progressive people interact with the kids. I'm posting this in the hopes of attracting more volunteers.
Meanwhile, I'm going to take them some of my pamphlets on finding careers in peacemaking and social change, etc. and the ACLU cards on what to do if stopped by the police.
