Jeanne and I are departing my place tomorrow at about 12:30pm with the "Remember Afghanistan" rose-covered posters. We will join the celebrating hordes along Colorado for a couple of hours, visually presenting, quoting Jeanne, "an important point of view."
We have done this for several years, and it is always fun, usually mostly positive reception, and interesting to see what emerges from the geographic mix, this year including the Bay Area and the Midwest, with, I'm told, Stanford and Michigan playing this year.
Room in the car -- peaceniks welcome!

After the December deluge of daily e-mails soliciting contributions, most of them from organizations that I donated to in 2013, I was relieved to receive an actual online petition this weekend from Democracy for America, which always asks for money too. The Senate will address the lapse in long term unemployment benefits this week. Although Dianne Feinstein presumably and Barbara Boxer for sure are in favor of the extension, it's good to let them know how many of their constituents are supporting their votes in advance: act.democracyforamerica.com/sign/extend_unemployment_benefits/?akid=4318.1641292.QZt08Y&rd=1&t=2

This came from Just Foreign Policy. There are now 51 co-sponsors trying to impose new sanctions on Iran, but neither Feinstein nor Boxer are there. I just called them both to congratulate and urge their sponsorship of a Nuclear Weapons Free World Act of 2013. 1. If you want to check whether your Senator is a current co-sponsor, go here: beta.congress.gov/bill/113th/senate-bill/1881/cosponsors 2. Call your Senators' offices in DC using this toll-free number for the Capitol Switchboard, courtesy of the Friends Committee on National Legislation: 1-855-686-6927 3. When the person in your Senator's office picks up, tell them your name and address, then say, "I urge Senator ____ to oppose S. 1881, the Nuclear Weapons Free Iran Act of 2013, which would destroy the possibility of a diplomatic agreement with Iran by imposing new sanctions at this critical moment." 4. When you're done, report your call with our easy response form: justforeignpolicy.org/act/menendez-call-in

Nobody officially represented the U.S. at the conference in Oslo last March on the Humanitarian Impacts of Nuclear Weapons, but 128 other nations sent delegates. The second conference takes place in Nayarit, Mexico from February 13-14, so the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation is sponsoring a petition to President Obama, asking him to authorize a delegation for that one. I was the 2589th signer: org2.salsalabs.com/o/6357/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=16244

Short term memory issues, or I would have posted my number, too.

That was a good petition, Roberta. And since I signed it, I'm back on Credo's e-mail list. I was apparently cut off last year when Credo changed its signature gathering software -- I used to get several a week from them for years, and I actually missed them. Here's another petition to sign at your own discretion. Democrat Lee Rogers has sent me dozens and dozens of e-mails after I contributed to his 2012 campaign against Rep. Buck McKeon. I got drawn out of Buck's district, and now he's retiring, yet I do not unsubscribe because there are often nuggets like this. Dr. Rogers says that he'll personally deliver the petition linked below calling for a raise in the federal minimum wage to Buck's office next week and invite the media: services.myngp.com/ngponlineservices/petition.aspx?X=j41dnwn2sMo=My in box received four identical thank-you-and-please-contribute e-mails from Lee's website right after I clicked on Submit.
