Just one example of what I missed because I was at the Montrose Peace Vigil. All of us have made concessions and arrangements in our personal lives to go public and populate the corner of Ocean View and Honolulu every Friday for 90 minutes since the beginning of 2006, standing for peace. Each October, my extreme sacrifice has been forgoing a few televised postseason baseball games. And this year, the Dodgers are playing. In the GIF above, Dee Gordon is clearly safe. Yet you have to admire the reflexive brilliance of Andrelton Simmons, who can tag a guy before the ball reaches his glove. Watch that play in real time -- everything happens in a fraction of a second. A few regulars couldn't come to this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil for much better reasons than baseball -- although Jeanne made a cameo with less than 24 hours to spare before Saturday's Empty Bowls -- but still, 10 people participated, close to our average attendance. Since October 2011, we have displayed all of the Defense Department's news releases announcing the troop deaths, almost always in Afghanistan, during our weekly vigils. In the past seven days, one death was reported. The second page is the Army's August suicide data report. Six spontaneous participants including two mothers with their little girls -- one of whom, only 16 months old, must be the youngest demonstrator at a Montrose Peace Vigil in our nearly eight years -- boosted our attendance this Friday to 16. We have to count her because she formed two fingers to offer a peace sign to everybody walking by. Her mom taught her that after she started to eat the sign she gave her. Sharon's friend Margaret stopped for awhile to hold a sign. We would have had 17 participants, Mike told us on his cellphone, except for an epic traffic accident on Interstate 210 that I just saw on the 11 o'clock news. In observance of Keep Space for Peace Week, Roberta mounted many of the signs she got from the Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space, which we displayed throughout the 90 minute vigil. Anni will post a photo soon. The deaths of four soldiers last Sunday in Afghanistan were well publicized because Congress did not fund the death benefits for their families, but their names were not mentioned. Montrose Peace Vigil posted them on the corner along with two others whose deaths were also announced by the Defense Department in the past week. Attached below is the PDF that we printed and taped to the light pole: Attachments:

Yes. Here are two snapshots of our fine group with the Space 4 Peace posters. If you go to the site's home page ( space4peace.org/)...on the left there is an "Action Menu" scroll down to GN Affiliates and you will see us listed as the Montrose Peace Vigil. Cool!

The full moon coincided with increased numbers of teenagers out on the sidewalks for this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil, but none of them seemed to be in the mood to protest. Unlike last week, we had no spontaneous participants on the corner -- just ten of our regulars. I'm always touched by all of the people who wave and honk from cars, and those who express support as they walk by. On the light pole, we posted the only death in Afghanistan that the Defense Department announced in the past week, along with its news release about the burial of the remains of two airmen who died in Laos in 1968, as the Vietnam War spread. Old wars never die. Both pages are attached in the PDF below: Attachments:

Headlights come on before 6 p.m. now. Anni's bringing her bag of candles again. But the mood remains bright on the corner. Thanks to a woman from Dallas who stood with Roberta at the beginning of Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil before any other regulars showed up, and because of two college age guys named Grant and Nick who held signs for the last 20 minutes, we had another great week of attendance: - Oct. 4 - 10
- Oct. 11 - 16
- Oct. 18 - 10
- Oct. 25 - 16
Montrose Peace Vigil averaged an even 13 participants per week this month, compared to 13 in September, 11 in August, 15 in both July and June, 11 in May, 13 in April and 12 each in March, February and January this year. In October 2012, the corner averaged 11 demonstrators per vigil, and in October 2011, it was 13. Next Friday will be the last vigil before Daylight Savings Time ends. Three of our stalwarts won't be able to make it, so we hope that you can drop by and keep company with the rest of us. Attached below is the PDF that we posted of the deaths announced by the Defense Department this week: Attachments:
