I have a lot of conversations with myself and one of them is an ongoing quest for the best rock n roll lyric ever. It's often between "I need TV, when I got T Rex," and "Is that concrete all around or is it in my head?" (Another one in the running is from Dylan's "Brownsville Girl." "The only thing that anybody knew about Henry Porter is that his name wasn't really Henry Porter." I never bought a Mott The Hoople CD, and didn't feel I needed to because "All the Young Dudes" was ever present on the radio.
I have enjoyed Brian's Ian Hunter posts and gratefully downloaded his election time song, "When I'm President." So when the contest to win Ian Hunter's latest live album appeared on this board I pounced. I feel beholden as the winner of the CD to report to all of the non winners.
It's really good. It's easy to see why David Bowie entrusted Ian Hunter with his great song and it is included on this album. There are some autobiographical narratives, an upbeat love song, and a cathartic personal goodbye to Mick Ronson. There's also a critical look at the "soul of America." And an introspective look at disintegration in "Man Overboard." I may have to buy that album.
There's a lot of passion and umph to the songs, kind of like opera without the costumes and a much scratchier voice. It's in the same league as Springsteen and Dylan.
So thank you,Brian and anni, for sponsoring the contest and letting me win. If anyone wants to borrow it, I'll bring it to the corner. And then we can all be winners.
