resurrecting this thread from the misty past: mr finn will be in l.a. in person in early august 2010, doing a sort of one off : As mentioned on www.frenz.com/timfinn/ & on a Frenz tweet, Tim Finn is playing 2 USA shows in August: Two Tim Finn dates for the USA-August 2nd-The Troubadour in LA and August 4th-City Winery in NYC. I guess..sometimes it pays to live in one of the two centres of the universe ;D

Although I never really got into Crowded House or Tim Finn solo I was a early fan of the "Split Enz". I saw them at a little Club in Seattle in 1981 called the "Showbox Theater". I also saw early performances of the "Police", "Specials" and "Dire Straights" there. I think the place only had a capacity of around 800. I know it was the "Police's" 1st US tour. "Split Enz" put on a amazing show. I especially remember their bright colored costumes and wild hair styles. I still have the ticket stubs as well as that laser etched album. www.showboxonline.com/market/venueinfo.php

Skipper, that photo you ran of Split Enz dates circa 1977 -- before Neil Finn joined the group -- which is when I saw them on their first U.S. tour at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach, not as nice a club as the Showbox in Seattle, it would seem. They opened for the Sons of Champlin, remember them? So I know how you might feel about catching the Police so early. You saw Split Enz promoting their biggest album, "True Colours," with the hit "I Got You," written and sung by Neil, which was played hourly on KROQ here. As mentioned on www.frenz.com/timfinn/ & on a Frenz tweet, Tim Finn is playing 2 USA shows in August:

I guess..sometimes it pays to live in one of the two centres of the universe ;D Leave it to Martine to always break big news to me about either brother named Finn -- thank you! The Troubadour's website shows no bookings yet in August, but I will buy tickets as soon as they go on sale. Tim last played L.A. in September 2008 at the El Rey after starting the year with his first appearance at the Troubadour, back when he still had a label in the U.S. It feels like a long time since he was here -- and I hope that Dave Davies and Ian Hunter don't schedule gigs on August 2. By the way, only Los Angeles is the center of the universe. And I still adore "The Conversation."

I've been checking the Troubadour's website for the past week, and although they've added a date to their August calendar and a few in September, there's still no booking for Tim Finn on Aug. 2.
This feels like the right time in my life to get obsessed with Tim's music again. I'll be driving alone to the desert this weekend and seeking wisdom from him in these impossible times. My Dad was my age now when I first heard and saw Tim early in 1977. I'm going to listen to "The Conversation" CD.
I spent a good part of this evening enjoyably watching Tim Finn videos on You Tube, choosing this promo for "What You've Done" from 2001 that captures his songwriting and performing genius for this century:

Thanks to Martine's post on May 5, I kept my eye on the Troubadour's website and snagged tickets for Tim Finn as soon as they went on sale. Based on his last appearance at the club, there was no danger that the show on August 2 would sell out, but ordering them makes me happy. The Troub uses an outfit called Ticketfly instead of Ticketmaster, so our $25.00 general admission only cost $31.88 each with all fees: www.ticketfly.com/purchase/event/9769The only drawback I see is that the concert's on a Monday night. Anni and I love the Troubadour -- it might be our favorite club in L.A. still. Anni stays in contact with an old friend who was a waitress there in 1974. She's planning a big bash for all the alumni over the past 40 years.
