That's another clip from San Francisco, another of the 17 excellent videos of the November 13 concert posted on You Tube by Craig Love. "Love Is the Only Thing," the last song on Chuck's latest album, might be the closest thing to an anthem that he has written. He opened the show with it. I had hoped that he might preview a song or two from the forthcoming album, but that was too much to expect from a four-date acoustic tour.
There will be no videos of the gig on November 19 at McCabe's, where cellphones and cameras are not allowed to be used at all. I finally made it to the concert room in a guitar shop for the first time in my life -- and the venue is 58 years old, like me. Anni had only been there once, 30 years ago. We'll be watching the schedule to return to McCabe's as soon as possible.
One of the greatest pleasures of our evening was discovering the songs of Stephanie Finch. This is "Tina Goodbye" from her 2009 album, "Cry Tomorrow."

Last month, Chuck Prophet's You Tube channel released the second single -- "Bobby Fuller Died for Your Sins" -- from his forthcoming album of the same name.
Anni and I just got back from our second consecutive January trip to the Bay Area. Last year, we had to return home the day before Chuck and the Mission Express played in downtown Santa Cruz, a 20 minute drive from our vacation spot in Ben Lomond. This time, we arrived the day after they performed in Berkeley. I've seen some videos on You Tube -- yet another stellar show we missed.
It's not like I'd want to get spoiled or anything like that. The concert schedule that Chuck announced on Christmas Eve will keep me deprived. Chuck Prophet and the Mission Express embarks on a two-month tour in early February, from Deutschland to the Netherlands to the U.K., then off to the SXSW festival in Austin for three nights. That's as close as they'll get to Los Angeles. The rest of the U.S. tour, co-billed with the Bottle Rockets, goes from the upper Midwest to the Eastern seaboard.

I'm a huge fan of Craig Love and Martin Lefkowitz, two guys in Northern California who produce some of the best audience videos that I've ever seen on You Tube. They've captured Chuck Prophet at various venues with good sound and great camerawork that often takes in the entire band. Craig shot the three concert videos earlier on this page of Chuck and Stephanie Finch last November. And Martin posted the clip below of a 2004 Chuck song, "Just to See You Smile," performed by him and the Mission Express on New Year's Eve.
I preordered Chuck's new album from Yep Roc Records, which mailed the CD's well in advance of the official release date, February 10, as the label often does. My copy of "Bobby Fuller Died for Your Sins" has left North Carolina -- it's due to arrive here Saturday.

That's "Jesus Was a Social Drinker" from Chuck Prophet's new album, which has been on constant rotation in our house and car for a month.
For the first time in memory, the Los Angeles Times published a review of a Chuck Prophet album in Sunday's paper. Unfortunately, it's not posted online yet. But finally -- after a long line of brilliant solo albums -- Chuck is finally getting some attention, as he noted in his newsletter last Thursday:

Chuck performs "We Got Up and Played" with a different band in this video released July 13.
Chuck just announced more U.S. and European concert appearances -- dates every month through the rest of the year -- and again no mention of Southern California. It's tough being a fan here, especially if you want to see him with the Mission Express. Chuck came to the Grammy Museum last April for a public interview and solo performance, but the last time he brought the band south was April 2016. The year before, they only played a private party in L.A.
One more thing, since I'm already feeling sorry for myself. Come September, Chuck Prophet and the Mission Express will open for Ian Hunter and the Rant Band at the Fillmore in San Francisco, which would be the dream concert bill of my life. I can't go. I'm seeing Ian at the Teragram Ballroom near downtown and the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano. Neither venue has named an opening act.

Chuck Prophet and the Mission Express circa 2012. Our long wait will be over on December 28 when Chuck, Stephanie and the boys return to Los Angeles and the Bootleg Theater. Anni and I bought our ridiculously cheap $15 tickets when they went on sale last month: www.bootlegtheater.org/event/1576901-chuck-prophet-mission-los-angeles/The Bootleg Theater has a few barstools along the wall opposite the stage, but we learned last time to arrive early and stake out a corner of the low bandstand, upon which we can sit until show time.
