I always ask Lloyd Hitt what's happening with the Little Landers Historical Society when I vote at Bolton Hall. This Saturday his group is putting on a talent show at the 96-year-old museum to raise funds for its exhibits and programs. You all know where it is: 10110 Commerce Ave. in Tujunga.
Anni and I will be there when the doors open at 6:30 for the 7 p.m. event because seating is limited to 60. Admission is $10 for the "comedy, music and more," with parking available behind the Elks Lodge across the street.
By the way, Lloyd told me they're attending a legal workshop to review the Draft Environment Impact Report for the huge development proposed for the Verdugo Hills Golf Course. That's at the municipal building all day Sunday, June 7.

Thanks for mentioning this. The June 7 CEQA workshop is $35 and will use the recently issued Draft EIR for the VHGC. See: www.gcvoice.org/current-projects/vhgc.htmThere may be scholarships still available (VOICE, STA and the VHGC Committee will pay the $35 for those willing to help write comments on the DEIR) Contact Marc Stirdivant stirdivant@charter.net for details.

Thank you for that information, Sharon! I wasn't aware of that Save the Verdugo Hills Golf Course website. Here's a direct link to the STA site with the flyer I have and their blog: www.sunlandtujungaalliance.com/Anni and I have tickets to another event that day, but I'll follow up on this campaign on the board and start a thread (if someone else doesn't do it first). It's going to be a busy summer indeed. Back to tonight's talent show, Anni got a message on her answering machine today asking for information about it. Because we had Lloyd's flyer, I saw that the phone number listed was virtually the same as Anni's. So I returned the man's call, answered some of his questions and gave him the correct number. Maybe we'll see him at Bolton Hall tonight!

The Little Landers Historical Society's president Lloyd Hitt opened by asking us to imagine a Saturday night dance at Bolton Hall in 1913. Some had horses and there might have been a Model T in town by then, but most people walked the dirt roads, the women in long dresses. It would be dark but for the lanterns they carried and quiet if not for their voices approaching the band tuning up.
No confusing tonight's show with an amateur hour (or even hour and a half). Every performer was a professional: a husband and wife team on alto saxophones, usually part of a jazz quartet, who rearranged four Duke Ellington songs. They were preceded by another couple, veterans of rock bands and cocktail lounges, singing "Cat's in the Cradle" with electric guitar.
The emcee was a Toastmasters award winner and the organist is the president of the Valley organ association. The program also included an a cappella rendition of "Old Man River" and bagpipes.
The best version I've ever heard of "Summertime" from "Porgy and Bess" was delivered over the backing track from a new CD by Franny McCartney, who's sang with the likes of Dylan and Streisand and was one of Bette Midler's Harlots. She earned the standing ovation to close the show. Let us hope electricity is here to stay.

And the only thing that could follow such an evening's fine entertainment? Yes, a delicious Avocado/Bacon Burger w/Fried Zucchini from Super CharBurger. Just ask the cat...
