The Eagle Rock vigil as seen on August 29, 2020. The North East Los Angeles Radical Neighbors for Peace through Justice started protesting military action in Iraq in November 2002, four months before the U.S. invaded. Eighteen years later, American troops remain in Iraq (and Afghanistan) and NELA Rad still occupies the southwest corner of Colorado and Eagle Rock Boulevards most Saturdays from 5 to 6 p.m. -- enjoying a steady stream of honking and waving people driving through the intersection and talking with some of the pedestrians passing under the shade of the big gas station sign -- while advertising for peace and justice issues. Vigil co-founder Ross has been bringing his Black Lives Matter sign since 2014. I said most Saturdays because the Eagle Rock regulars do not meet in extreme heat or rain, unlike us crazy old folks in Montrose on Fridays. Next month will mark 18 years of the Eagle Rock Peace Vigil. Here's a write-up of the 15-year-anniversary:

Many of us did a lot of good work for peace in the past couple of decades - but we need to redouble our efforts now!

For the vigil on Halloween, three people wore costumes.

The Haiti Action Committee is soliciting photos of people holding signs in solidarity with Haiti to post on social media during the week of December 10 to 16, 2020 -- from International Human Rights Day to the 30th anniversary of Haiti's first democratically elected government. Scroll down this webpage for the photo instructions: haitisolidarity.net/social-media-solidarity-actions/Stand with Haiti at the next vigil in Eagle Rock this Saturday, December 12, from 4 to 5 p.m. on the southwest corner of Colorado and Eagle Rock Boulevards.

Even as the pandemic gets worse, traffic seems to be increasing at the intersection of Colorado and Eagle Rock Boulevards, at least between 4 and 5 p.m. on Saturdays. We still get occasional yells of "T---- 2020" from passing vehicles, but we're heartened by all of the honks, waves, peace signs and shout outs -- exuberant and based in hope and reality. And we still have a lot of great conversations with pedestrians, almost everybody wearing a mask. Six longtime vigil regulars came to the corner last Saturday.

Reminder: During Daylight Saving Time, the vigil time in Eagle Rock is 5 to 6 p.m. most Saturdays in the shade of the gas station sign at the corner of Colorado and Eagle Rock Boulevards.
Thanks to our old friend Kathy -- a stalwart of the now defunct peace vigil in Claremont that started in 2002, like the Eagle Rock vigil -- for coming all the way from her home in Pomona for last Saturday's vigil.

Daylight Saving Time is gone, so the Eagle Rock vigil -- which celebrated its 19th anniversary last month -- now runs from 4 to 5 p.m.
