Howdy folks,
Here's something that's going on at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church (2700 Montrose Ave. ) this Thursday from 11 am-1 pm.
July 9 Saving Your House from Foreclosure Debra Zimmerman, Attorney with Bet Tzedek Legal Services. Zimmerman is a nationally known expert on housing rights.
Our very own Debra from the corner will be sharing her caring expertise on mortgage issues in these trying times. We'll be having something every Thursday for 8 weeks, same time, same place. We're calling it Hope in Hard Times and we hope to offer a place to gather, helpful information, lunch (mmmm,) and mutual support.
If you know anyone who might benefit from such an event, please pass the information on. I will be there as part of the hospitality team, but as an art teacher (and art teachers are on the fringes of the economy) I will be listening to all of what the speakers have to say.

I've been looking forward to going to this for weeks -- now it's happening tomorrow: Here's something that's going on at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church (2700 Montrose Ave. ) this Thursday from 11 am-1 pm.
Because I edited a weekly Jewish newspaper in L.A. from 1979-2000, I thought I knew how cool Bet Tzedek could be. But this glowing Wikipedia entry brought me up to date: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bet_Tzedek_Legal_Services_-_The_House_of_JusticeFrom there you can link to the Bet Tzedek website and Debra's bio: Debra, a graduate of UC Berkeley and Boalt Hall School of Law, has been a Consumer Protection Attorney with Bet Tzedek Legal Services since 1999. She specializes in the area of home equity fraud and represents clients in cases involving loss of title, predatory lending, foreclosure prevention and foreclosure fraud. Ms. Zimmerman has served as a consultant in the area of predatory lending and foreclosure fraud for local and national media, including public radio’s MarketPlace, CBS Undercover, the Los Angeles Times and Reuters International. She has been a presenter for numerous trainings provided to attorneys, law enforcement, social workers and others in the areas of real estate fraud, predatory lending and financial elder abuse.

This was a great event...I highly recommend attending. Even though Brian and I are 'soon to be' 1st time home buyers, it's great to learn where to go to get help and what scams and pitfalls to avoid. And how to face tough times armed with an objective view and some truth. Thanks for the fine organizing, Pastor Paige, the greatly informative talk, Debra Z. and the wonderful folks providing a scrumptious lunch (including Jeanne's world renowned fresh breads). What a great day!!!

Debra rocked. Her presentation at Hope In Hard Times was chock full of information, passion, compassion and intelligence. We were lucky to have someone in the midst of all of the real estate/financial chaos take the time to explain what's going on, even if it ain't pretty.

The second Hope in Hard Times gathering takes place this Thursday, July 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church, 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose. Joohee C. Lee, M.B.A., a financial services professional with New York Life, will speak about "Raising Financially Responsible Children." To view the next six topics in the series, go to the church's website and click on the brown link to the PDF flyer: www.cvumc.org/cgi-bin/gx.cgi/applogic+ftcontentserver?pagename=faithhighway/10000/6000/591CR/floating3

Joohee was wonderful with insights and suggestions for participating with your kids to make budgeting and saving fun/ successful. She stressed the importance of being honest with yourself AND modeling these "common sense" budgeting tips, so children can see how it's done. My favorite tip was to just say no to 'easy' credit...if you can't afford it today...save up until you can... Then, as a special treat we enjoyed a salad bar and homemade (by our Jeanne) [glow=red,2,300]delicious[/glow] crusty bread AND cornbread, moist with whole corn and bacon. So good I called my second slice "dessert".

Vernita Perkins, a career training and development specialist, will discuss "Getting a Foot in the Door" at the third Hope in Hard Times gathering this Thursday, July 23, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church, 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose.
I must say that the lunch after each talk is freaking fantastic. You'll not find a better salad bar, let alone one with homemade breads -- or finer bunch of folks to eat with.
Anni has something planned in another zip code this week. She might be interested in the topic on the 30th -- I know I am especially. I hope to get the time off work again in the middle of the day to be there too.

Anni and I will be at the fourth Hope in Hard Times gathering this Thursday, July 30, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church, 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose.
We both want to hear Chris Bravata, vice president of executive development with Lee Hecht Harrison, speak on "Interviewing, Cultivating Offers and Negotiating."
Anni has to leave for an appointment after the talk, but I'll stay for the best light lunch in town.

I've been working since 1972, when I was 14, yet I never got one job through a modern day interview with behavior-based questions like, "Tell me about a time when you took the initiative to set career goals and objectives."
At Pastor Paige's church Thursday, 17 people gathered and heard the distilled wisdom of Chris Bravata, hitting the key points of a generous chapter from the job search guide published by his worldwide human resources company, Lee Hecht Harrison, the best I've seen.
Along with specific questions you might encounter, he gave possible answers you could give to convey the right attitude and get the information you need to proceed. Every book and article I've read about job interviews advises you to send a thank-you note immediately afterwards. Chris told us that 95 percent don't, so he gave us some pointers for writing and addressing the note to further set yourself apart from the pile of other candidates.
Thank you, Jeanne and Paige, for letting me know about Hope in Hard Times.
