He doesn't have a name, yet...and he's as sweet as candy...he's very shy and when I pick him up he hisses then almost immediately starts to purrrrrr...I think his hair is short, formal, mostly black with white feets and tummy... Tomorrow is our first trip to the vet! Woooohw!

Far out, Jeanne!
It's been about 36 hours and the little weasel is still basically hiding in our huge bathroom, although he's taken to a basket with a blanket tonight. He now uses the cat box without fail after peeing on an old Dodger gym bag the first time. Hope he isn't a Giants fan.
He stopped hissing yesterday evening and started eating seriously. I watched him for ten minutes, sitting cross-legged on the floor. When he was done he walked into my lap and climbed up my chest to curl around my neck and purr all over my shoulders.
It had only been three weeks since Il Duce died, but our mutual friend Linda from the corner had one stray kitten too many for her house, so we have her to thank. I only hope the cat doesn't spend the next 22 years living near the toilet.

The Widdle Kitty With No Name has happily inhabited the bathroom since Sunday -- purring and playing but mostly eating and sleeping. Like a cat. Anni and I bring him out to nap on our chests, however.
Neither one of us has had a kitten this young and small in a quarter century (and we've always had cats). He seems remarkably docile and compliant. No doubt he'd had human contact before he was dumped at Linda's house. She said he would come in to eat and snuggle but stay outside the rest of the time, probably hiding in some nook.
I'm grateful that he doesn't want to walk out of the bathroom yet -- I fear he'd get stuck under our long, two-ton couch and we'd need the help of three or four people to lift it.
I never had to kitten-proof a house before.

WiddleKiddy is now named: Bernard Yes Jeanne, after the good Dr. Bernard LaFayette.

Okay, Bernard. We're expecting big things from you. Like finding reconciliation between the cats and dogs and the cats and mice.

Bernard loves to play hide and go leap...he loves hunting the sock on a shoelace, eating a ton and biting his mommy, just to practice for the REAL HUNT...(not gonna happen..he's not going outside). I'm sad to say his stink mouth has befouled his sweet face, so much so that we both have to check which end we're cuddling...PEEYUEW!

Anni took Bernard to Dr. Kim Mitchell at Rosemont Animal Clinic the next day. She diagnosed the little weasel with his second tooth infection, perhaps inflicted by a wad of aluminum foil he had chewed, and prescribed antibiotics. Bernard purred while being examined, something she's rarely seen. He's already better. Martine, I hope you don't mind sharing a rather large bathroom with Bernard. Because he's too cute too ignore.

Another month has gone by, and lately Bernard is taking over the rest of the house -- running, hiding, exploring, attacking our ankles, being clapped off the coffee table and lounging on the linoleum before lunging off again. We put him back in the bathroom at night, where he's now sleeping in the sink, his new favorite bed. Soon he will be too big. He's tripled in size in less than two months. Sometimes we'll catch in his eyes the look of an adult cat.
I mistakenly thought Bernard was a calico, but he doesn't have a third fur color. Anni corrected me and looked up tuxedo cat, finding an article saying that cats with the pattern are "200 percent smarter than the average cat." Why not 210 or 189 percent? It's one of those stats that gets wielded instead of writing something that invites contention: tuxedo cats are twice as smart. I've had cats (or they've had me) my whole life, and Bernard is pretty freaking smart, especially considering that he's only three months old.
That's enough of my ode to Bernard. Let's just say it looks like we won't be taking Linda up on her offer to return him if we don't like him.
