Next Sunday night, 7/26 at 7 PM at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church, 2700 Montrose Ave., we will be showing a film that documents peacemaking efforts in the Middle East.
Roberta, Paige, Michael, and I (and others) have been meeting once a month for over a year to discuss books that we have read about possibilities for peace. We thought we'd try a change of medium for the summer. You are all invited to join us and watch. Roberta has promised to make popcorn.
Here's a brief description: Encounter Point (2006) is an 85-minute feature documentary film that follows a former Israeli settler, a Palestinian ex-prisoner, a bereaved Israeli mother and a wounded Palestinian bereaved brother who risk their lives and public standing to promote a nonviolent end to the conflict. Their journeys lead them to the unlikeliest places to confront hatred within their communities. The film explores what drives them and thousands of other like-minded civilians to overcome anger and grief to work for grassroots solutions. It is a film about the everyday leaders in our midst.
So, if you'd like to join the ranks of everyday leaders in our midst, come see how. And then DO try it at home.

Thanks to Pastor Paige and Jeanne for having us at the church last night -- and Roberta for making great popcorn -- for the screening of the 2006 documentary "Encounter Point." The film's homepage is the best gateway into a ton of material about Israeli and Palestinian people it depicts, although the links to the trailer don't work for us: www.encounterpoint.com/index.phpAll of them, younger and not so young, had different backgrounds but they shared a calm belief in nonviolent interaction as a means to help effect change after learning that nothing else works. I walked in looking for lessons and stumbled upon more than a few flashes of brilliance. It might have been Aziz who said all conflicts between two heavy-smoking populations would end if the Palestinians were required to buy all of their cigarettes from Israelis and the Jews had to get theirs from the Arabs.
