This month, Montrose Peace Vigil will include special observances at two of our regular Friday vigils from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the northwest corner of Ocean View Boulevard and Honolulu Avenue in Montrose, Calif. On Sept. 9, we're joining 49 other get-togethers, so far, that are being held nationwide -- dinner parties to raise awareness and money for the Bradley Manning Defense Fund. Since we mostly stand, Roberta is planning to bring simple fare like sandwiches and fruit. Here's the Courage to Resist webpage: www.bradleymanning.org/dinnerYet to be scheduled for the second half of September so we can better plan and publicize it: our first War Is Over Mending Circle. Nancy was inspired by a quote by Yoko Ono, "Mend an object. As you mend, you mend something inside your soul as well. You mend something in the world as well." Discussion is ongoing in this thread on our message board: montrosepeacevigil.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=talk&action=display&thread=198&page=1Please feel free to drop by the corner any Friday and demonstrate, eat, mend -- or just watch.

Turnout was excellent at this Friday's vigil, especially considering that some regulars were off traveling on summer vacation or just for Labor Day weekend. We had 14 participants, including a friend of Bruce, who stopped to talk to him and wound up flashing peace signs at the honking cars, as well as two young kids named Leah and Riley, accompanied by their Mom, who picked up signs. The weather was beautiful too. I checked with Roberta to see if there was anything we could do to help plan and stage the Montrose Peace Vigil's dinner party on the corner to benefit Courage to Resist's Bradley Manning Support Network on Friday, Sept. 9, during our regular vigil from 5:30 to 7 p.m. But Roberta wants to do everything herself: send out the nice fill-in Word attachment with her e-mail invitations (which I've attached below), provide a jar for cash contributions along side a posterboard with information and even bring all of the food for our stand up picnic. Watch this thread throughout the next week for updates! Attachments:

Thanks Brian. I am happy to provide food/drinks for our simple meal.
MPVers can all help by inviting other friends and associates who might be supportive. Please ask for rsvp's so I have a vague idea of numbers beyond the regulars.

If attachment attaches, you'll see my excuse for absence next Friday. It's not from my mother or doctor. I'll be with other faculty at dinner and opening of our show in Sierra Madre. Not one to frequently use superlatives, I do think that the four mugs I have in the show are among the best I have ever made. Attachments:

It will be fantastic to see Sigrid and Tony again. Roberta sent me the following link on Saturday to a page on the Bradley Manning Support Network's website listing our event this Friday. It's good, although I thought Roberta's original copy was best: www.bradleymanning.org/events/bradley-manning-solidarity-dinnerAdd Anni and me to the list of those who will absolutely be there. If we hear from any vigil stalwarts or irregulars who are interested before Friday, we'll post their RSVP's too. Anni may drive Linda to the corner. (I asked Bill last week if he was going to come, and he said no.)

Twenty-one persons took part in this Friday's vigil featuring our stand up picnic and fundraiser for the Bradley Manning Support Network, and I'm not counting the many people who just stopped to talk about him and contribute to his legal defense. We raised $310 at my last tally. Five of the 21 participated in a Montrose Peace Vigil for the first time, including two musicians named Matt and Eric, who found out about our event from a Courage to Resist e-mail with a link to our announcement on their website. Roberta put together everything beautifully: she set up a folding table behind a posterboard with Bradley's photo and some of the secrets we learned from him about the wars and our government's conduct in Iraq and Afghanistan. On the table, she offered informational flyers and served water, milk, chocolate milk, watermelon, trail mix, pickles and a variety of delicious sandwiches with the best ingredients on freshly baked bread. They were so great that I have to list all of them from the menu she made: - salami, Swiss cheese and mustard on rye
- egg salad a la Nancy with light olives and Dijon on rye
- ham, Swiss cheese, mustard and mayonnaise on whole wheat
- salami and mustard on rye
- egg salad plain on white
- ham and butter on white
- chicken with jalapeno and mayonnaise on sourdough
- cucumber and tomato on whole wheat
- cucumber, Jarlsberg cheese and tomato on white
What a fabulous presentation -- thank you so much, Roberta! Anni will post photos here this weekend.

And credit where amply due to Anni for the delightful addition of Armenian bread, hummus, and a special apricot jelly candy, which apparently one either loves or the opposite. Cynthia instantly and without reading the package came out with the perfect Arabic pronunciation of the name, which escapes me. $310.00 went off to Courage to Resist in Oakland for the defense of Bradley Manning. Today their message highlighted this: ymlp.com/za3ykMWe're off to check out the Channel Islands!

and nestled among all of those wonderful happenings was the winning of the Guess the Number of Bowls and Win a Mug Contest. Our much esteemed, observant, counting Brian was the closest by a long shot. He guessed 100 and the actual number was 102.
How many do you think there will be on 9/22? Guess at this MPV venue by Thursday 9/22 and be a winner.
Victory through peace, awareness, effort and blind luck.
