Eleven people participated in this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil -- nine regulars joined spontaneously and separately by two wonderful folks named Mike and Zari. Most of us spoke to Brandon Hensley, a reporter for the Crescenta Valley Weekly, who came to the corner to write a story about the official flag removal by the shopping park during our vigil. Luckily, three counter protesters were back this week, so he went across the street to interview them afterwards. Brandon said his piece will run in next Thursday's edition. While our attendance was slightly below average, the number of troop deaths announced by the Pentagon was ten, the most since we started posting them on our custom engineered portable telescoping half-mast flagpole in September. Sorry, you have to be registered and logged in to this message board to read the PDF attachment below. But everybody is welcome to join in here -- and at the corner of Ocean View Boulevard and Honolulu Avenue every Friday between 5:30 and 7 p.m. Attachments:

The weather kept us from raising the flag, so here's another photo instead. The winter rainstorm persisted at the beginning of this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil, yet nine familiar faces were at the corner. The sidewalks were almost empty and the motor traffic was light, but I can't remember another vigil this year when so many drivers and their passengers honked, waved and flashed peace signs. This was only the second time since September that we could not bring our portable telescoping flagpole -- and post the Pentagon's death announcements for the week. There were six: Attachments:

If last Friday felt like the last day of winter, this week's Montrose Peace Vigil marked the first day of summer weather, with the temperature high in the 90's. John, a member of Jeanne's church, spotted us and joined the demonstration for his first time. Linda is one of our greatest stalwarts, driving from her home in North Hollywood. She called Anni after 6 p.m. while waiting for the Auto Club to say she got a flat tire on her way to the corner. I wish we could count her: - Apr. 6 - 11
- Apr. 13 - 9 (rain)
- Apr. 20 - 9
The veterans and their flag display were absent from the opposite corner for the second week in a row, so all of the honks were for us. We raised Mike's half-staff flagpole and posted a printout of this PDF announcing five troop deaths in Afghanistan in the past seven days: Attachments:

A solid group of Montrose Peace Vigil veterans assembled on this fine spring Friday evening: - Apr. 6 - 11
- Apr. 13 - 9 (rain)
- Apr. 20 - 9
- Apr. 27 - 11
April's average weekly attendance was exactly 10 participants, compared to 12 in March, 11 in February and 9 in January. In April 2011, the average was 11. Our standard bearers Jim and Mike couldn't get to the corner until it was too late to assemble the flagpole and fly our American flag at half staff for more than a few minutes. But we still posted on the lightpole a lengthy list of press releases from the Department of Defense announcing ten deaths, all in Afghanistan: Attachments:
