Twenty-one persons took part in this Friday's vigil featuring our stand up picnic and fundraiser for the Bradley Manning Support Network, and I'm not counting the many people who just stopped to talk about him and contribute to his legal defense. We raised $310 at my last tally. Five of the 21 participated in a Montrose Peace Vigil for the first time, including two musicians named Matt and Eric, who found out about our event from a Courage to Resist e-mail with a link to our announcement on their website. I registered this Friday's (Oct. 5th) vigil as a "Support Bradley Manning" event. The Bradley Manning Support Network called for house parties before the week of Oct. 22 (2nd anniversary of his releasing the Iraq War logs), so I guess I jumped the gun a bit. Nothing fancy, I'll just bring the donation box and any printed materials they send to me as the organizer. I figure that corner is our house every Friday, why not party for Bradley? Here's where to RSVP: events.bradleymanning.org/32190/support_pfc_bradley_manning?recruiter_id=32190

Here's the picture of the pretty orange lights (and Brian) to help get the party started: You can make checks payable “Courage to Resist" and bring to our corner or: Send to: Courage to Resist, 484 Lake Park Ave #41, Oakland CA 94610. Please note “Manning defense” on the check’s memo line.

Roberta brought a Bradley Manning poster with pictures and information, and passed out flyers and circulated a petition on his behalf, at this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil. Turnout was the highest since June 15, with 16 participants including three teenage girls who spontaneously picked up signs, two returning vigil veterans and our beautiful stalwarts. The counter protesters were absent yet again, so all of the honks, shouts, peace signs and waves from the passing vehicles were for us -- and there were certainly a lot more than we've had lately. With the cooler weather, sidewalk traffic has picked up as well. We were saddened to report the deaths of nine American men and women serving in Afghanistan in the past week. This is the PDF of the Department of Defense announcements that we posted during the vigil: Attachments:

Here we have already devoured Roberta's delicious cupcake bonus to the 'Free Bradley Manning' fund raiser, started last Friday, Oct. 5th. Because we're so good at multi-tasking, in this picture we are holding signs announcing: KEEP SPACE FOR PEACE

When the counter protesters return, I will report it on this message board. No point mentioning every week that they're absent. Eight of our regulars and Roberta's old friend Don, who hasn't participated in a Montrose Peace Vigil for years, came to the northwest corner of Ocean View and Honolulu this Friday. As part of their big new autumn promotion, the shopping park association has hired a four-piece band to play on that corner next Friday during the vigil. We've been there every week for nearly seven years -- and this will be the first time after 350 vigils when the merchants are using that area to attract people. Meanwhile, U.S. troops die in Afghanistan. Since last October, we have posted all Department of Defense press releases announcing each week's military deaths at www.defense.gov/releases during our vigils. Everyone is welcome to register and log in on the board to view this PDF attachment: Attachments:

Here's the story of the Friday night's push for more revenue in Montrose. What about if we make signs to bend the story toward our point? "Shopping? Pick up some PEACE" "Don't buy more war" Increase revenue in Montrose -- Cut war spending" (ok, awkward, needs work). "PEACE -- Your best buy" ETc? www.glendalenewspress.com/news/tn-818-1012-seeking-to-tap-into-new-customer-base-montrose-merchants-to-stay-open-later,0,6115665.story

Due to a mix up, the band did not set up this Friday on the northwest corner of Ocean View and Honolulu in Montrose for the shopping park association's Taste and Shop promotion -- they played down the block. Out of deference to the actor who portrayed Pugsley on "The Addams Family" TV series in the 1960's, signing autographs behind a table near the Vietnam War memorial, the Montrose Peace Vigil stood on the southeast corner. It's not as great a spot for meeting pedestrians, but judging from the honks and waves, the folks in cars found us. Our attendance so far this month: - Oct. 5 - 16
- Oct. 12 - 9
- Oct. 19 - 7
On the nearest lightpole, beside bales of hay topped by pumpkins with candles, we posted a printout of this PDF attachment compiling the Pentagon's announcements of five military deaths in the past week: Attachments:

Wow - Glendale managed to tie your number last night. For the first half hour it was just Nancy and Henry, then I showed up at 5:30 and in the last 20 minutes we got 4 more when Nancy's high school friend now living in Canada came with her husband, daughter and son-in-law! We got lots of positive feedback from the passers by.

I really enjoy hearing from Sharon about the turnout at the Glendale Peace Vigil -- especially when it's good! They meet on Friday evenings from 5 to 7 p.m. while we gather in Montrose from 5:30 to 7. Semi-regulars and Pastor Paige combined with Montrose Peace Vigil stalwarts for this Friday's showing: - Oct. 5 - 16
- Oct. 12 - 9
- Oct. 19 - 7
- Oct. 26 - 11
The weekly average this October was 11 participants, compared to 10 each month in September, August and July. The previous October averages were 13 last year and 17 in October 2010, which is the best month since I started recording attendance on this message board in November 2008. This week's announcements of military deaths in Afghanistan, along with the Army's monthly suicide report: Attachments:

There were 5 of us last night - me, Nancy, Henry, Marcel and Varaz but we got lots of positive feedback from passers by! Plus we had a costumed dancing guy waving a huge sign to advertise the Halloween store down the block. Bill stayed home to water the yard because of the high winds and fire warnings.
