Winter finally kicked in for the last Montrose Peace Vigil of our eighth anniversary month. I heard that the temperature was 57 degrees in Montrose on KNX 1070 -- whose news anchors were broadcasting all day from the Black Cow Cafe down the block, spotlighting the Crescenta and Tujunga valleys for the radio station's On Your Corner series of remotes -- as Anni and I drove there before 5:30. We soon found that it was too breezy to light any candles.
The street lights are still out. Bill e-mailed photos to the City of Glendale's public works director, and he got a reply saying that they'd swing by and take a look. At least we had light at the beginning of Friday's vigil, with the official sunset now at 5:23. Then we were shadowed from the remaining ambient light under the trees, occasionally needing to alert drivers rounding our long wide corner to watch out for pedestrians in the crosswalk.
Despite the mild gloom and potential doom -- and even with the absence of Roberta and Jeanne, who had other great places to be this week -- we were in excellent spirits. Other stalwarts provided a very respectable turnout:
- Jan. 3 - 11
- Jan. 10 - 13
- Jan. 17 - 14
- Jan. 24 - 15
- Jan. 31 - 12
Montrose Peace Vigil averaged 13 participants per week this month, the same as December. We had 14 in November after 13 in October and September, but only 11 in August. The weekly average for all of 2013 rounds to 13. In January 2013, it was 12, much better than the average of 9 in January 2012.
The Pentagon announced no military deaths in the preceding seven days.
