Members of Montrose Peace Vigil at a march and rally in downtown Los Angeles, October 2007. A woman walking a dog during this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil stopped to ask if we were protesting another emergency, like last September's Syria scare. Apparently, she hadn't seen us before. Thankfully not, we answered -- just the same war in Afghanistan, now in its 13th year, that our government is negotiating to extend for another 11 years. In our way, we soldier on. This month, Montrose Peace Vigil marks our eighth anniversary. Five of the nine people in the photo above still come to the corner almost every week, and two others showed up in 2013. Thanks to the members of Glendale Peace Vigil, who merged with the Montrose vigil in January, our average weekly attendance was 13 last year. This Friday, we had 11 participants. Since October 2011, we have displayed all of the Defense Department's news releases announcing troop deaths, almost always in Afghanistan, during our weekly vigils. In the past seven days, two deaths were reported in the attachment below. The second page is the Army's November 2013 suicide data report. But who is that person standing next to me with short, curly hair? Is she still here?

The white Christmas lights that had been wrapped on every tree in the Montrose Shopping Park were gone by this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil, so the corner was dark as it was before Thanksgiving. When Daylight Savings Time ended in early November, we noticed that most of the street lamps at Ocean View Boulevard and Honolulu Avenue were out. Sometimes, a few of them would flicker on and go off again. Jim called the city to report the darkness during a vigil last fall. I have no standing, being an L.A. resident, but I wonder why nobody from the city has fixed the lights in the normal course of duty and why no merchants seemed to have complained by now. That's my rant. Otherwise, the weather was beautiful -- as were the honking drivers, waving passengers and friendly pedestrians going by, many of them familiar faces every Friday. Montrose Peace Vigil had 13 sign bearing and candle holding participants this week. Attached below is a PDF of the Pentagon's announcement of a soldier's death in Afghanistan, which we taped to the best lit light pole: Attachments:

We had yet another Southern California day of high temperatures in the mid-80's, and traffic was brisk on the sidewalks and the streets during this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil. Fourteen people stood for peace on the corner, including a young man who was leaving just as I arrived after 6, our first spontaneous participant in many weeks. I keep reading how the U.S. is ending our occupation of Afghanistan after more than 12 years. Meanwhile, every week, some of the natives insist on killing Americans in uniform with improvised explosive devices and small arms fire. The troops remain. The Pentagon announced another three deaths in the past week. We posted a printout of this PDF throughout the vigil: Attachments:

We had more June weather in January for the third week in a row at this Friday's Montrose Peace Vigil, and more participants too -- 15 demonstrators. I really wish I could include the guy who works at the wonderful new Gio's Cafe and Bakery nearby, who stopped to express his support and talk about income inequality but did not hold a sign or candle or wave to the passing vehicles. (I have to stick to a standard to keep my weekly counts consistent.) All of us were blessed to see Rosalind for the first time on the corner. Her name keeps coming up lately on this message board, as the coordinator of the local Progressive Democrats of America chapter's letter drops at Rep. Schiff's office and as a standard bearer for the Peace Train, marching with us in the Montrose Christmas Parade. Attached below is the PDF that we printed and posted to honor the two deaths announced by the Department of Defense this week: Attachments:

Eight years, sheesh. Here we are...candles in hands. What do we want? World Peace. When do we want? Now and Forever.

Hmmm. Still trying to find my way around. Posting this so I can see what it looks like without the avatar. Thinking about what I would want for that. Love your choices, anni and Brian. Will i need to log in every time?

Nope, just the one time log in...if you choose the square option to "remember me." Just like in the olden days.
