A dozen participants in the Montrose Peace Vigil hold candles on January 24, 2014, marking our eighth anniversary. If you've visited the Montrose Peace Vigil message board previously, you've probably noticed that things look different now. That's because our host ProBoards installed Version 5 of its forum software here on January 26. In the past five years since I started this board, the world has moved from desk and laptop computers to viewing the Internet on screens on smart phones and tablet devices. The upgrade not only makes our pages less cluttered looking and our posts more readable, I believe that it will give our message board more access to more potential readers. Some things won't change: Guests are always welcome to post on this message board. Just click on the prominent brown Reply buttons, or fill in the Quick Reply form at the bottom of any page. Everybody is also invited to join by clicking on the Register link at the top of each page. We will approve new members within 12 hours, and IP addresses without a record of spamming will receive notification via e-mail to come back and Log In. Thank you for visiting!

We stand at the corner of Ocean View and Honolulu in Montrose, Calif. every Friday evening from 5:30 to 7 p.m.. The picture below shows four of the eight (total) of the most stalwart (or crazy) of us on February 28, 2014...during a lull in the biggest Friday rainstorm in exactly three years.

A moment during the Montrose Peace Vigil on April 18, 2014. Feel free to drop by any Friday! RAPP, the Read and Practice Peacemaking group of Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church, has sponsored free screenings of documentaries every month since February. And Montrose Peace Vigil is proud to have co-sponsored two of those movie nights immediately after our weekly vigil from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the corner of Ocean View Boulevard and Honolulu Avenue. We'll be back at the church nearby -- 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose, CA 91020 -- at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 23, for "Cast the First Stone," a film about 75 inmates of two Louisiana correctional facilities who staged the largest prison production of the Passion Play ever. Everybody is welcome. Please plan to come -- for details as they develop, keep visiting this thread on our message board, before and after the event: montrosepeacevigil.proboards.com/thread/359/23rd-2014-next-rapp-movie

The front of our big new free-standing sign, which was first displayed at a Montrose Peace Vigil on May 9. Almost every week, a pedestrian stops to ask us sincerely, What war? The President has announced that U.S. troops will remain in Afghanistan through the end of 2016. Right now, at least ten percent of them are still involved in combat operations, so we sadly expect that we will continue to post military deaths as reported by the Defense Department on the light pole during our weekly vigils. We see a lot of familiar faces on the sidewalks after eight and a half years of uninterrupted vigils -- and recognize many of those honking and waving in the passing cars. While our regulars advertise many ways to improve our country on the corner, all of us stand for peace. We hope that you will stop by any Friday between 5:30 and 7 p.m. at the intersection of Ocean View Boulevard and Honolulu Avenue in Montrose, CA 91020.

Ten of the dozen participants at the Montrose Peace Vigil on June 27, 2014.
A month ago in this thread, I was lamenting how many people on the street were unaware of the continuing U.S. military presence in Afghanistan. But everybody seems to have heard about Iraq since. As I write this, the Pentagon just announced that 300 more troops are being deployed there, bringing the total to approximately 800. So far. Despite the absence of several regulars who were on vacation, Montrose Peace Vigil averaged 11 demonstrators per week in June, only two shy of our average for the first half of 2014. We welcome reinforcements advertising for peace every Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the corner of Ocean View Boulevard and Honolulu Avenue in Montrose, Calif. U.S.A. Just stop by.

What was some of the music played? Bill does a great rendition of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here." He also arranges Neil Young's "Pocahontas" on acoustic guitar beautifully. What else do I remember from recent Montrose Peace Vigils? Bill has a deep repertoire of 60's Bob Dylan songs, and he sings a traditional blues song whose name I can't recall that was made famous by the Grateful Dead. My favorite was "Carmelita," one of many wonderful songs on Warren Zevon's debut album, which name checks L.A. landmarks around Echo Park in 1975 like a Pioneer Chicken Stand at Alvarado Street, although that one didn't really exist there, as Bill pointed out. It was probably good that there weren't many pedestrians around when we joined in on the chorus, "I'm all strung out on heroin on the outskirts of town." Maybe next week we can get Bill to sing "Mohammed's Radio."

He did Grateful Dead's "New, New Minglewood Blues" because we were talking about needing a new New Deal to get some job growth. Jeanne sang along on Dylan's "Tangled Up In Blue" and "When I Paint My Masterpiece." I think it was "Down By the Riverside" that made the lady who was sitting on the concrete bench smile and come over and talk with us. And he does Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer" but it's pretty much the same sentiment as "Pocahantas."
