this just in from Jeanne:
Greetings Friends,
We hope that your 2015 is off to a good start and we want to help you with that by offering a thought provoking film for you on Friday, January 16th.
Is there anyone among us who has not been confronted by fervent "Jesus Saves" people who are intent on preventing our eternal damnation? I just saw some on Colorado Blvd. on New Year's Eve. They seem so certain of their opinions about life after death and their fear based words seep into our culture. There are also many Jesus followers who have a kinder, gentler view of God and are much quieter about about sharing it.
"Hellbound?" takes a look at the concept of hell and presents an eclectic mixture of interviews that cover a broad theological spectrum. You will hear from pastors, atheists, an exorcist, heavy metal rockers and the notorious Westboro Baptists. What does this have to do with peacemaking and social justice? If the prevailing cultural view of God is that God punishes us with eternal torment, the myth of sacred and redemptive violence is accepted and reflected in policies and actions of organizations, communities and on a national level. Peacemakers face that attitude when we offer another way. It's good to know what we working with.
Here's a link to the trailer. www.hellboundthemovie.com/
The award winning film is entertaining as it takes on these deep subjects. We hope you'll join us at CVUMC on the 16th. Doors open at 7. Film begins at 7:30. 2700 Montrose Ave, Montrose.
Peace,
Jeanne Lavieri

This looks pretty interesting (albeit disturbing)! I've reposted this in Norm's Atheist group on Facebook. I read Dante's Inferno in high school. It seems to me that as bad as the torture in Hell is, it's not as bad as what humans can do here on Earth (although, at least in this world there can be escape--even if it may be death). A whole circle of Dante's Hell is devoted to people whose only crime is being born before the time of Christ.

To supplement the official trailer of "Hellbound?" in the link topping this page, there's an amateur You Tube clip shot in front of St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York on September 11, 2011. It shows the filmmaker of "Hellbound?" interviewing two members of Westboro Baptist Church, who were there to protest the Firefighters' Memorial on the tenth anniversary of their deaths at the World Trade Center. Jael Holroyd, who uploaded the video, is apparently a church supporter. She wrote this on her You Tube post: "The documentary intentional (sic) omitted their wonderful words to make them seem halting." Those five minutes are astounding. (The sound improves after a minute.) That couple demonstrates that there is a hell -- on earth -- for some people.
I look forward to the movie screening on Friday, January 16, at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church in Montrose. Is there a discussion planned afterwards?
Meanwhile, here is another take on the trailer -- the "Hellbound?" Official Teaser Trailer:

Thanks for these alternative trailers, Brian. They show that the film has range. I'm able to hear the sound when I go through my Safari browser. For some reason the sound is mute when I go through Google Chrome. We have not finalized the plans for discussion afterwards. I think we will need one. There will be so much to go over. The two hour length means a full discussion would go rather late.

From Jeanne, "I have previewed the "Hellbound/" dvd and it is one hour and twenty four minutes, not the two hours that I thought. So we'll be set for coffee and refreshments downstairs." I always love our discussions after the movies...adds a certain depth to the whole movie going experience.

Looking forward to seeing some peaceniks tonight for "Hellbound?"
On another topic, Pastor Steve, Edmond and I are going to be meeting with Rev. Jim Conn, a civil rights, nonviolence leader from way back when. We want to plan some kind of workshop for our church and community about nonviolence and raising awareness of systemic racism. If any of you have thoughts about needs in the community and suggestions for what we might offer, please share.

We're going to pass on this film - can't imagine anyone actually believing in a literal hell - we participated in the church defense when WBC was in town and saw in person that there's no convincing the hard core delusional.
A workshop on nonviolence and raising awareness of racism is something we can support!
See you at the vigil tonight.

He is very wise and has been working for justice and peace for a very long time. Brian recalls having been arrested with him once. When we told him how RAPP partners with the Montrose Peace Vigil, he knew of us. He has heard about us and saw us from his car once. We never know who may be out there. He heard about the things we've been working on and thinks it's good. He had suggestions for long term planning and strategies to make the most of our efforts. He says his expertise is in civil disobedience and CVUMC is not ready for that. Perhaps someday. It was inspiring to meet such a serious activist and to receive his encouragement. Here's a link to his blog on Capital and Main:

i have no idea how the video of my son's recital got there instead of the link to Capital and Main. Enjoy it and google Conn's blog on your own. You can get there better without my help. That link is great, Jeanne! What a touch he has.
Editor's note: Here's a link to the Rev. Conn's Blog, I hope...capitalandmain.com/author/jconn/

Getting back to Hellbound for a moment, I heard a discussion on the radio this morning (KPFK's Letters & Politics) that I found fascinating (though I don't consider myself religious). A religious scholar discusses numerous ancient religions, including variations of Christianity, that have survived for millenia in out-of-the-way places but are now endangered because of all the hornet's nest the U.S. has created in Iraq and neighboring countries. One of these variations of Christianity believes Satan was (or will be?) redeemed and transformed back into an angel. Satan/Lucifer is actually highly-revered for this reason. The program is archived for about 90 days. archive.kpfk.org/mp3/kpfk_150129_100040letters.MP3
