There's a documentary about Modern Times on YouTube. I thought of posting it here, but maybe I'll wait till after the movie is shown. (Right now I'm watching another documentary about a different Chaplin film, The Great Dictator. Pretty interesting to see how it came about.)

Quoting Jeanne's recent e-mail:
Dear Friends,
You are in for a treat this month. We thought you might want us to lighten up a bit for the summer and so Montrose Peace Vigil and RAPP (Read And Practice Peacemaking) have chosen Charlie Chaplin’s “Modern Times” for our next film at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church. Save the date, Friday, July 31, and join us at 2700 Montrose Ave, Montrose. Doors will open at 7, film at 7:30.
The Library of Congress has declared “Modern Times” to be culturally significant. We find it to be remarkably relevant, what with it’s look at industrialization, labor, justice, poverty, drugs, and love. We guarantee that you will find it funny. You will see how Chaplin’s comedic genius influenced Lucille Ball and Dick van Dyke. Charlie Chaplin wrote the script and score, and directed and produced. You will be amazed when you see how deeply talented he was.
This is meant to be an intergenerational, community wide screening. Please bring your children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors to enjoy this classic. It is an opportunity for them to experience some classic American culture that gets forgotten these days. Let’s fill up Fellowship Hall and laugh out loud together.
Peace, Jeanne

One of the official trailers for "Modern Times" made in this century by the Chaplin estate.
Strictly speaking, "Modern Times" is not a silent film. Besides the exquisite Charlie Chaplin score and the sound effects embedded in the celluloid, the soundtrack incorporates the voice of the big boss barking orders to the factory floor on a giant screen -- and later features Charlie's singing debut, a nonsense song that doesn't require a language to make you laugh.
Chaplin's first script had dialogue. He even tried a few scenes for what would be his first talkie, but changed his mind. "Modern Times" was released in 1936, eight years after silent films died. For his final appearance, the Little Tramp needs not speak.

The "Modern Times" trailer that was shown in movie theaters so long ago.Charlie Chaplin's "Modern Times" screens this Friday, July 31, at 7:30 p.m. in Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church, 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose, CA 91020. Doors open upstairs in the sanctuary at 7. Admission is free. Click here for the church's website: www.cvumc.org/CVUMC might be the finest local venue to watch a DVD, with two big dual screens and good sound. Pastor Steve, the church members and Read and Practice Peacemaking group leaders Jeanne and Edmond, who put together these movie nights, also make the community room downstairs a great place to gather afterwards for everybody, including nonmembers like me. Please come and feel welcome, as I always do.

This is the documentary I mentioned several weeks ago. However, since it's in French (but overdubbed in English), it's probably the one Brian has. I find it interesting. It begins with two French film theorists analyzing it (overdubbed in English) then segues into a documentary.
There's another documentary on YouTube about The Great Dictator that's primarily a "making of" documentary.
