Some of the early arrivals at last year's nonstop 24-hour vigil in Eagle Rock. Our friends with the long-standing vigil in Eagle Rock, since 2002 -- Northeast Los Angeles Radical Neighbors for Peace Through Justice -- will hold their third annual 24-hour vigil starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 5, and ending on Sunday at 2 p.m. on the corner of Colorado and Eagle Rock Boulevards. Anni and I had a great time last year protesting at what was essentially a street party without the inebriants, of course. Although we only made it to 9 p.m., I counted at least two dozen participants in the first seven hours. We enjoyed the music and sing-alongs, topical discussions, refreshments and many varieties of pizza for dinner. We missed the late night documentaries screened on laptops and the early morning yoga exercises. A full day of activities. Keep checking this page for updates as the planning progresses -- and then for reports and photos posted during the event and afterwards. This post was edited to reflect the postponement of the event to a later date.

we are happy to have glendale for Bernie Sanders at our 24 hour vigil. It is encouraging to see people getting out and speaking up. I'll be riding with Edmond and Barb to go see him tonight.

Norm announced on Wednesday that the 24-hour vigil at Colorado and Eagle Rock Boulevards will be postponed two weeks -- from August 22-23 to Labor Day weekend, September 5 into the 6th. Start time is still 2 p.m. Norm created a Facebook page for the event: www.facebook.com/events/710531979075019/I'll pass along any plans for activities at the vigil here as well, and I invite others to contribute.

Ross and Norm conserving their energy at the beginning of last year's 24-hour vigil in Eagle Rock. Nina posted a brief announcement of the 24-hour vigil next Saturday on the NELA Rad -- that's the North East Los Angeles Radical Neighbors for Peace through Justice -- official page on Facebook: www.facebook.com/pages/NELA-Rad/234583950085085On August 2, Dionne started another page for the 24-hour vigil and sent out invitations to 205 people hooked up to Glendale for Bernie's Facebook account, a very impressive number. As of now, 12 registrants say they're going and 14 say maybe: www.facebook.com/events/109289212753131/Both of those links work for everybody. You do not have to be associated with Facebook to read them -- just like any billboard or a flyer promoting an event.

This is stolen and shared here from Nina's NELA's Rad post on FaceBook:
Because Peace, Justice and The Environmental Crises are 24/7. There will be a series of presentations, discussions, late night laughter, hopefully 7am Yoga, Music, a movie or two.... "Like" and "Follow" for updates as the program develops, Local folks from the Bernie Campaign will be joining us. Come out and talk about issues we face together, share ideas, solutions, hope, and frustrations. Our past vigils have been invigorating, exhausting, exciting, intense.... This year promises to be more of the above, and probably something new. If you focus on a particular issue or action, please sign up to do a ten minute presentation, with time for discussion, so we can all deepen our understanding of it! A Dusk a Dawn, a night of learning, sharing, and celebrating.
Be there or be square!

That's just part of the scene at Eagle Rock and Colorado around sunset tonight. Once a year, I get to write about an event that is still happening -- NELA Rad's 24-hour vigil. As Anni and I were leaving, food trucks were still parking across Eagle Rock Boulevard for a separate street festival that promised to draw even more people to the southwest corner. The 24-hour vigil goes on until 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6. Ross, pictured above, was set to screen a DVD from the Monorail Society, "Monorail: The Intelligent Alternative," in the wee hours on a laptop computer. Norm assembled a toy monorail to promote the documentary and the urban transportation concept. Anni and I were so happy to hang out with Hector Sanchez and Rick Lawndale again this year and hear their renditions of our favorite old songs along with Rick's wonderful original social commentaries.

We eventually got the miniature monorail going to further draw attention to the monorail display. Yesterday, as were nearing the 24-hour mark, a conservative woman came over to us and started questioning the validity of the signs and "you liberals." At one point she asked, if we're against factory farming, why do we eat chicken? She gestured to some pastries (pictured below) that were about six feet from her at that moment. I went over and held the package closer to her to reduce any ambiguities. She just changed the subject, which was what she continually did whenever we addressed her questions/statements. Since she was stereotyping a lot, I was tempted to ask her if she was from Huntington Beach (she reminded me of a lot of people from there that I've met), but I didn't. It was a stimulating conversation.
