Greetings Friends, It seems a fitting sequence to follow Dr. Tinker’s account of Europeans immigrating to this continent and dominating the Native People with a look at how the descendants of those immigrants are responding to new people entering our borders. As our presidential candidates strive to stand out with simple solutions to complex problems, human beings become reduced to abstractions, objects of debate, and political pawns. Christians in one breath praise Jesus who taught us to welcome the stranger, and in the next suggest that undocumented people should “go to the back of the line.” In “Documented” Jose Antonio Vargas elevates the discussion. He’s an award winning journalist who was brought to America as a child, without papers, by his grandfather. Vargas risked his career and security in order to tell his story with the intent of dismantling stereotypes and exposing the oversimplification of the issue. He shares his heartache of being separated from his mother for eighteen years. The film asks more questions than it answers. Taking the time to learn Vargas’ story will provide a face for you when read headlines. Listening is a step in welcoming. I hope that you will consider watching “Documented” with us at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church on Friday, September 18. We’re located at 2700 Montrose Avenue in Montrose. Doors open at 7, film at 7:30. Peace, Jeanne

An especially timely topic with the thousands of Syrian Refugees running for their wretched lives. So many meeting closed minds and doors...People already suffering drought/starvation/fiscal depression. And yet others with welcoming arms, food and warm clothes...Grant me the grace of an open mind, heart, and arms...always.
