This in recently from Bert Newton, who joined the parade again this year AND brought 3 others! I have no doubt we can come up with $50, if we want to be a sponsor, and I am sure they would take more. Maybe a separate sponsorship by Eagle Rock vigil? Might be a good publicity opportunity.
Hi Roberta,
Hope your holidays are going well. Thanks for organizing another great Peace Train float in the Montrose Christmas Parade the year! It was a lot of fun!
We are again at a point of asking for sponsors for the Palm Sunday Peace Parade. The requested donation from sponsors this year is $50.
Let me know what y'all decide.
Thanks!
Bert

Roberta and Jeanne at a previous parade. Thanks, Roberta, for initiating the annual thread. The 15th annual Palm Sunday Peace Parade takes place this year on April 9, starting at the Reformation Church at 570 E. Orange Grove Blvd. in Pasadena and ending at Colorado Boulevard and Garfield Avenue in front of the Paseo Colorado mall. We march on sidewalks and observe traffic signals, so no permit is necessary. This year's theme is housing and homelessness. Keep checking this page on the message board for more news before -- and after -- the event.

Now if I could only get people to say whether we want to sponsor so that I can answer Bert! I guess I'll just say "yes" and hope for the best! We can contribute to the sponsorship even though we don't join the walk.

The walk was familiar but much was different at the 15th annual Palm Sunday Peace Parade in Pasadena, starting at the gathering in the church. Instead of the single sheet program, we were handed rope handle bags with the Peace Parade logo, containing materials to organize locally for affordable housing. Dr. Jill Shook, an author and housing justice advocate, spoke about her work with churches that find housing for the homeless in Pasadena. Even the songs were new -- no more "Down by the Riverside."
Lady Wisdom, the giant puppet that led the parade for years, was also gone, as was the pony that substituted for the donkey that Jesus rode into the marketplace. Fewer young people have come since the former sponsor, the Peace and Justice Academy, folded in 2015. The new organizers are reaching out to the community in their part of Pasadena, making the pulpit announcements and printing the four page program in both English and Spanish. Volunteers with safety vests kept the march smooth through the crosswalks between the church and the mall. I really enjoyed the band that played at both ends, led by Pastor Delonte Gholston with Una and Jeff Jost.
This was our sixth Palm Sunday Peace Parade. Anni and I always love to hang out with old friends. I counted 14 members of Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church and Montrose Peace Vigil at this year's event.

The speakers were prepared and represented different facets of the work going on to prevent homelessness in Pasadena. They added up to a steady, constructive, comprehensive program, that over years has seen quite a bit of success. It inspired hope in me and I wonder if we could approach peacemaking in a similar way - I mean with local and attainable goals.

Brian got some great pictures at this year's (2017) Palm Sunday Peace Parade. Here are just a few...in chronological order-ish.

A few more pictures. You can see the partial display of plans to end homelessness, first in Pasadena, then...who knows? At the Paseo, Delante Gholston leads us in songs of hope and strength. Finally our friend and strong heart, Irena. What a day!
