Our next film will be Ava DuVernay’s documentary about race, justice, and mass incarceration. These are issues that we are a part of, either directly or indirectly. As activist law professor Bryan Stevenson, says:
People say all the time, ‘well, I don’t understand how people could have tolerated slavery?’ ‘How could they have made peace with that?’ ‘How could people have gone to a lynching and participated in that?’ ‘That’s so crazy, if I was living at that time I would never have tolerated anything like that.’
And the truth is we are living in this time, and we are tolerating it.
— Bryan Stevenson, 13th The film is a powerful look at what is going on around us. Come and be informed in the company of other curious and caring neighbors. Gathering to learn together creates bonds in a world that is in need of community. We hope you’ll want to watch 13th with us and participate in the discussion afterwards.
Please note that we’ll be showing the film downstairs in Fellowship Hall. We hope the informal atmosphere and proximity to kitchen and restrooms will be more comfortable. See you on June 2, at CVUMC, 2700 Montrose Ave. (Park on the lower end of church parking lot and look for signs.)
Peace, Jeanne L.

That's the official trailer for "13th" from Netflix, which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature this year.

A friendly reminder that we will be showing 13th this Friday, June 2, in Fellowship Hall, downstairs at Crescenta Valley UMC, 2700 Montrose Ave., Montrose. It’s a hard look at what’s been going on in our criminal justice system. Refreshments will be served and there will be time to converse after the film. Come, gather with us and nurture community and communication.
Peace, Jeanne

I just learned Netflix also has a taped conversation between the filmmaker and Oprah. I suppose it's just as well it couldn't be shown on Friday along with the documentary--as it was, there was quite a bit of info. to absorb--but sometime I plan to watch this (and the documentary again).
The filmmaker says she had enough info. to do a mini-series on this subject but decided it would be more effective to condense all her research into 100 minutes.

We weren't able to make it to the June 2 screening so we watched 13th on Netflix last night. It's a very powerful documentary. I've seen Michelle Alexander speak at the local ACLU chapter meetings - she's just as articulate in person - and recommend her book "The New Jim Crow" if you haven't read it, newjimcrow.com/.

We watched the Oprah Winfrey/Ava DuVernay interview on Netflix yesterday. It is also worthwhile. The ending is hopeful in that they are expecting the knowledge disseminated via the film will spur activism in more people. I wish I could be as hopeful. I'm getting depressed about this current administration's ability to wipe out decades of social justice progress.
