Greetings, Friends and Neighbors, We have have a powerful film lined up for you in February. “I Am Not Your Negro,” directed by Raoul Peck and narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, is a piercing look into the deep and tenacious roots of racism in our nation. Based on James Baldwin's manuscript documenting his close connections with Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and MLK, the film offers plenty of visuals that underscore our culture’s reinforcement of racial divide and domination. Jackson’s reading of Baldwin’s words and actual film footage of the author provide a portrait of unflinching honesty and courage. Your presence will be welcome and appreciated as we watch this important telling of a tumultuous time in our history. The past will still be with us until we fully understand it. We will have a discussion afterwards and hope to learn from the film and each other. Gather, Inspire, Act, Jeanne L
Doors will open at 7, film at 7:30 on Friday, February 9, refreshments provided. Crescenta Valley UMC, 2700 Montrose Avenue, Montrose.

This is the official trailer for "I Am Not Your Negro," which was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at last year's Academy Awards:
Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church screened another 2017 feature documentary nominee last June, "13th," about race, justice and incarceration. (The ESPN documentary about O.J. Simpson won the Oscar.)

In this interview with Jimmy Kimmel last year, Samuel L. Jackson discusses his role as the narrator of "I Am Not Your Negro." The video starts with a 30 second clip of James Baldwin on "The Dick Cavett Show" circa 1970, when Dick's hair was short and he sat behind a desk. Everyone is welcome this Friday, February 9, at the free screening in Fellowship Hall -- which is on the floor below the church sanctuary -- with its couches, armchairs and tables with folding chairs spread out in front of the big screen in a room with good sound. You can enter Fellowship Hall through the gate on the left side of the building, or just walk through the open kitchen door in the back like I do.
