AB 392: ACLU Reducing Police Shootings Forum Tue. May 14, 7p Friends Meeting House, 520 E. Orange Grove Blvd., Pasadena. The California Act to Save Lives provides a clear definition for when peace officers can use deadly force. Introduced by Assemblymember Shirley Weber (D-San Diego) and cosponsored by Assemblymember Chris Holden (D-Pasadena), AB 392 requires that police officers only use deadly for when there is no reasonable alternative, including warnings, verbal persuasion, or other nonlethal methods to resolve or de-escalate a situation. Concerned that the Weber bill should endanger police officers’ lives and threaten public safety, opponents have introduced SB 230, a competing measure that would increase officer training but would not limit the use of deadly force. Criminal justice reform advocates worry that this toothless alternative would sustain California’s epidemic of police shootings. reducing-police-shootings.eventbrite.com
