Just to whet your whistle...the very first of this year's finished Empty Bowls. There are hundreds more bowls from which to chose your favorite. And then, how to fill that bowl with the most delicious soups from so many places? This year's Empty Bowls Fundraiser will surely be "Out of This World."

Picture yourself in a different galaxy. Up ahead you spot the friendly constellation "Empty Bowls." Just inside this constellation you encounter a friendly stranger, in an apron (things aren't so different after all) offering you a beautiful bowl which seems to be filled with a delicious concoction we earthlings call soup. All seems much better, now.

The 12th annual Empty Bowls fundraiser is Saturday, October 19, at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church, 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose, CA 91020, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. There's so much to love every year: helping to support charities that feed hungry people, enjoying soups made by local chefs -- and feeling the spirit inside, and behind, this wonderful get together. You will also find some of that spirit in a ceramic bowl, made by local volunteers, which you can take home (after it is washed for you, of course). The link to the church's website: www.cvumc.org/
