The third annual Sunland-Tujunga Indigenous Peoples Day is happening Sunday, October 8, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the parkland managed by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority on Big Tujunga Canyon Road north of the Little League field. Learn more about the event and the people involved on ST Forward's webpage: www.stforward.org/2023-indigenous-peoples-dayIf you'd like to help underwrite the celebration, here's the link to the sponsors' Givebutter page -- I see that two longtime Montrose Peace Vigil participants contributed $600 of the $2,615 raised to date: givebutter.com/LJx5NY

Only ten days remain until this year's Sunland-Tujunga Indigenous Peoples Day on October 8. I checked back with ST Forward's event page, and when I scrolled down I saw they added schedules for the stage presentations and the workshop programs. Here's that link again: www.stforward.org/2023-indigenous-peoples-day

ST Forward has sent out another "desperate" e-mail blast calling for volunteers for the event on Sunday and for the canyon site clean-up the day before. If you're interested, here's the link to their Google sign up form:

The 2023 Sunland-Tujunga Indigenous Peoples Day is just one sunrise away!
ST Forward's Givebutter page is still taking donations, with $2,780 of the $4,000 goal raised as of now:

I was there, very nice! During a talk about language and pronunciation, they gave their way of pronouncing Tujunga. A more accurate way of spelling it would be "Tuxuungna." The "x" is like the sound in Xavier. The "gna" at the end requires a sort of clicking motion with one's tongue. They don't have a "g" sound as we know it.
There was also a tour of native plants. A problem for the area is illegal dumping of materials, often from demolished buildings. There was a pile of broken concrete, another pile of old wood. Thus, they have a monthly volunteer clean-up. Even with that there's still a lot for them to deal with.
